As former CIA agent and photographer O'Neal (Gay Day: The Golden Age of the Christopher Street Parade 1974–1983) traveled through cities around the world for over 40 years, he was drawn to the counterculture genre once known as graffiti—now better known as street art. This volume documents the art he photographed in his travels and recounts the evolution of a form that can only be classified by location and technique, as authorship generally remains unknown. O'Neal showcases street art masterpieces by famous and anonymous artists alike; he also depicts how this art ages when left out in the open—images gradually fade beneath a sea of puerile tagging. Street artists reject the commodification of art and repurpose images from sources as diverse as Diane Arbus and Coca-Cola. VERDICT As street art has shifted increasingly into the mainstream, few have been better positioned to follow this both interesting and troubling medium through its adolescence than the peripatetic O'Neal.
