CYROPAEDIA (or Education of Cyrus) is a biography of Persian emperor Cyrus the Great, who ruled Persia more than a century before the time of Xenophon. Xenophon idealizes Cyrus as the ideal ruler, and very likely relied on unreliable court sources for his CYROPAEDIA. Nonetheless, the work provides an interesting look into life in ancient Persia.

About the Author

Xenophon of Athens (c. 430 – 354 BC) was an ancient Greek soldier, historian, philosopher, and biographer. Born to a wealthy family near Athens, Xenophon was a contemporary and admirer of Socrates. He journeyed extensively in the Perisan Empire as part of an expedition by Cyrus the Younger to unseat his older brother, the emperor, in 401 B.C. Xenophon wrote extensively on his travels in Persia.
