Éxitos Eternos

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
The first of what's sure to be many posthumous collections from the Queen of Salsa, Exitos Eternos brings together some of Celia Cruz's most recent hits. For your average 70-something star, that's not great news. But Cruz was putting out progressive Latin music until the end, especially her recordings made with producer Sergio George. "La Vida Es Un Carnaval" (featured in the film Amores Perros) and "La Negra Tiene Tumbao" are thick with hip-hop beats, African percussion, and rap, over which the diva soars in full voice. These tracks brought her back into the Latin mainstream to a degree not seen since her days with Fania records; for good measure, Exitos Eternos features two '70s classics. "Quimbara" is an unstoppable rhythmic juggernaut from her album with Johnny Pacheco and "Usted Abuso," from her first collaboration with Willie Colon, Only They Could Have Made This Album. Pick up a disc of Cruz with La Sonora Matancera, and Eternos makes a fitting retrospective of late, but great, Celia Cruz.
