Overview

The year 1999 was the year of big names, new players and new lows for the adult entertainment industry.

On the one hand, Jenna Jameson returned after having taken a nearly two-year hiatus. And her return signaled a pair of big budget movies for Wicked Pictures — the all-girl Jenna-fied bonanza Hell on Heels and Dream Quest, a fantasy epic in which fans finally got to witness Jenna engage once again in boy/girl hardcore.

Another blonde bombshell, Jill Kelly, was off to a roaring entrepreneurial start with a new production company and an impressive new series entitled Perfect Pink. Kelly would later go on to form Jill Kelly Productions, but during 1999 she was making her first set of big waves.

1999 was also the year that Jewel De’Nyle first hit the scene, landing a high profile contract at New Sensations that helped propel both her own career, as well as the status of New Sensations, a company which was, at the time, attempting to make its own mark among big players like Wicked, Vivid, VCA, Metro and others.

Upstart company Knob/Ryder also hit the scene in 1999, spending money like it was going out of style – throwing lavish off-camera parties and running their on-set productions like lavish parties as well.

And then there was, of course, the legendary Jim Powers who was eternally busy inventing new ways to appeal to the lowest common denominator among porn fans. 1999 was the year Powers brought us the American Bukkake series. While one end of the adult industry was reaching towards the Hollywood Hills, Powers was reaching towards the Average Joe with open arms.

Pornography had become both the inaccessible realm of the superstars and the accessible realm of fan participation.
