A great adventure full of action, humor and wacky sexual situations

What can I tell you about Y the Last Man that hasn't already been said? This is a science fiction story about Yorick Brown, the only man to mysteriously survive the mass death of every creature on the planet with a y chromosome. What is unique about this story is that Yorick is no two-fisted man of action, but a pretty average guy who has a pet monkey; the monkey's name is Ampersand, if you're interested.

In this volume, Yorick meets his allies. 355 is an agent who protects Yorick at all costs. Allison Mann is a brilliant doctor who may be able to figure out what killed all the men.

I'll skip rehashing the plot. All you have to know is that Y The Last man is well written (Brian K. Vaughan) and well illustrated (Pia Guerra, et. al.). If you have some preconceived notions about comic books, this is sure to show you what else comics have to offer. What makes Y stand out is that it finds a good balance of violent content, character development, plot progression and good dialog.

If I have anything negative to say about this particular collection, it's that there is no extra content whatsoever. You get the single issue covers, and you have some character sketches in the back. If you own a trade of Y the Last Man with better supplementary material, then you reallly don't need to buy this.

    A Post-Apocalyptic Treasure

I picked this up both as a fan of LOST and dystopian fiction. Everything about this series is A-class, from the clever pop cultural references to the very realistic relationships formed between the characters. As a whole, the series is funny, heartbreaking, and brilliantly refreshing. I sobbed my eyes out at the end of the last book, and that's not something that happens to me very often. This story just grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go.

    Better then watching tv.

This is so far my favorite comic series as of yet. Its got a great balance of humor that goes with all the men dieing off thing. I felt like I was part of the team with all of Yorick's misadventures across a ciaos strewn world. You'll end up loving all the characters. You'll love them so much you might hate the last half of the last trade. I hated the way they summed up the ending. I literally was boo hooing at the end of the series. My boyfriend said he didn't mind the ending so its all a matter of perspective. Dont listen to the jerkoff's that say Vaughans a bad writer. His writing is incredible. It's what a comic series should be.

Anybody here seen my old friend John?

When it comes to graphic novels, I'm really more of a dabbler than a diehard, and so I discovered Y - The Last Man after seeing it listed as one of Wizard Magazine's top 100 graphic novels. I enjoyed the art and the way various characters threaded into one story, and I found the concept---that all the males on earth save one human and one monkey have perished---full of potential. But I also vastly underestimated how painful it would be to immerse myself in that world. I kept thinking, "No men around? What? But...I'd miss them. Can't we just fix it? Bring 'em all back? I don't want to be alone with millions of women...!" ::shudders:: I can certainly see why this is on Wizard's list, but I don't know that I, personally, can bear to keep reading. Maybe if they write a mirror universe where all the women are killed off....

The best graphic novel ever written!

Its hard to believe that this could be as good as it actually is. The story, five years in the making, is simply the best graphic novel ever written. I want every adult I know to read this, whether they like comics or not. Its that good. The ending, which I couldn't imagine a decent way to do, was amazing. It was heartbreaking, thrilling, hilarious, and poingnant. Vaughan and Guerra have crafted an American masterpiece that shouldn't get slighted because is a comic book. This is amazing literature. Period. Amazing!!

    Simply the best!

I'm one of those people that always wait for the other shoe to drop. While I have loved every second of this series, I'm waiting for it to come off the rails. Well, it hasn't with this trade and I now doubt it will. This trade gives us more history with some of the non-main characters and some great story ideas. Vaughan always comes up with ideas that I simply didn't see coming. I have no idea how this could be better!

    Seriously terrific story telling!!

Vaughan & Guerra's epic continues in the 5th collection the the last man on Earth and his trials & tribulations. The story is so immense and involved its great. Flashbacks to before the plague add so much to the back story and the dialogue is classic. Fantastic stuff!!

    Series continues to roll!!

The book is amazing. Its starting to boter me that I didn't read this when it was originally released. Yorick and his motley crew are in it deep again and its so hard to see a way out of some of the situations they find themselves. Shockers abound. True shocks. Great stuff!

Tiny step down but still better than almost everything else!!

I have adored the first three of these volumes. This trade is a tiny bit of a step down because of the hyper-sexual overtones that seemed odd in their placement. Not that they were in the book just when, where, and more importantly, why. I did love the look back to more of Yorick's reaction to the plague. The overall story is pushing west and I'm loving it!!

Great twist, but when will the cloud of mystery be lifted?

So far every series has had an excitingly tasteful twist in the story, whether it has to do with why all the males died or just building the characters. I particularly liked this series because two of the main characters revealed something about themselves that you might not have seen coming. As always the artwork was appealing and very tasteful, and they did a great job of leaving that cliffhanger on this one. Overall i liked this series but i feel like we're moving too slow, rather, i feel like despite all the action and adventure we still know very little as to why the male population dissappeared. But then again this is my first time reading an entire comic series

One of the best ideas in years!!

Vaughan & Guerra knock it out of the park with this amazing telling of a male centered plague that decimates the population. The storyline is incredible, the dialogue is hilarious & realistic, and the art fits so well with the book. I can't praise this book enough. Fantastic stuff!!

Alas, Poor Yorick, a great read!

I am not usually a fan of graphic novels. In fact I've only enjoyed two of the ones I have read. Y: The last man is one of them. It has deep characters that you want to follow and you start to love. I also liked how it showed all the problems that the plague caused, it has alot of social and political conflicts in it. The first volume may be the only time you could want to put this book down, because as soon as you get furthur, your hooked! You won't want to stop anywhere. Overall, it's a great read for anyone mature enough to handle it!

    Amazing!

This Graphic novel is amazing. I haven't been able to read graphic novels well because I stare too much at the drawings or lose myself in the store line. But Y the last man won me over. It's an amazing store line. I love how it shows what it might be like if there are only woman in the world. There is even a female president! I have to recommend this book to everyone, even to people to don't really read graphic novels. This is the one for you.

    A Graphic Novel with Substance

I will tell you right away that I am a huge fan of the Y: The Last Man series. Over time this has been the only series I have followed to completion. While the idea of all the men dying does not sound particularly original, the storyline is much deeper than one would expect. Unlike many graphic novels these days, it does not rely heavily on violence and absurdity to advance through the story. It also focuses not on the plague itself but on how society and the individual deal with the sudden and immense loss. As the author put it (I am paraphrasing), "It is the story of the last boy becoming the last man." I have to agree. I will end by reiterating my main point. This is a graphic novel that doesn't replace substance with style.

    Fantastic Series Continues

This second volume in Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra's fantastic series finds the trio of Yorick Brown, Dr. Alison Mann and Agent 355 on the run from the bloodthirsty Daughters of the Amazon who want Yorick dead. They find themselves in a small Ohio town where all the Women have a secret and there they will have a final confrontation with the Amazons and Yorick's sister. Hero. This second volume keeps up the quality of the first and slowly begins setting up the series for the many plot twists and turns that are to come.

The Beginning of a brillant and original series

Y: The Last Man is the series that put writer Brian K. Vaughan on the map and for good reason. The premise is that a sudden plague kills every male on earth except Yorick Brown and the helper monkey he was training. Trying to figure out why he was spared Yorick makes it to his mother, a congresswoman in Washington. She pairs him with a secret agent called 355 and they journey to California to find doctor Alison Mann the only person they beleive might be able to find out what caused the plague. Vaughan and artist Pia Guerra put a fresh spin on postapocalyptic storytelling and the dialouge contains a surprising amount of humor. While this slow paced character driven storytelling and realistic art won't appeal to fans of super heroes this is easily one of the best comic series ever and as hard as is it is to beleive with something that starts this strong it just keeps getting better from here.

    Disgusting

Y the last man should be called Y the hell was this written. With a lame story, stupid characters and dialogue that goes on and on, I doubt anyone would choose this over getting your nuts cut off. I was at least hoping for some gory scenes, but the gore was lame and the characters were all gay..figuratively and literally. Brian Vaughan really needs to learn how to write.
