Overview

Y: THE LAST MAN is the gripping saga of Yorick Brown, an unemployed and unmotivated slacker who discovers that he is the only male left in the world after a plague of unknown origin instantly kills every mammal with a Y chromosome. Accompanied by his mischievous monkey and the mysterious Agent 355, York embarks on a transcontinental journey to find his girlfriend and discover why he is the last man on Earth.

Now, the entire critically acclaimed Y: THE LAST MAN saga written by Brian K. Vaughan, one of the writers of LOST, is collected into a series of oversized, hardcover editions. In this third volume, Yorick's unbalanced sister Hero tracks him to San Francisco, only to find him seemingly succumbing to the male-killing plague after losing his still-unused engagement ring to agents of the Setauket Ring. Plus, Yorick, Agent 355 and Dr. Mann ship out across the Pacific to Japan in pursuit of Yorick's stolen monkey Ampersand, whose innards may hold the key to mankind's future

Library Journal
Yorick Brown and his pet monkey, Ampersand, are the last males standing after a mysterious plague kills everything with a Y chromosome. When it's discovered that Ampersand's DNA could hold the secret to reversing the "gendercide," Yorick embarks on a journey to save his companion and, one hopes, the human race. The adventurers encounter a government conspiracy centered on a valuable medallion that could hold mystical powers and face a tense showdown between a gang of pirates and the Australian navy, all while Yorick's sister attempts to track him down. Lost writer Vaughan's story sometimes comes dangerously close to the adolescent fantasy it tries to avoid being, but it always manages to save itself with a gut-checking thought or exchange of dialog. Yorick is a believable and likable character, and the story flows seamlessly from scene to scene.Verdict Fans of postapocalyptic sf who are looking for something different are the ideal audience for this book, but mature readers will appreciate its social critique and sober examination of human nature. It's also an engaging adventure story, flavored strongly and distinctively with an almost all-female cast, and there is certainly a readership out there for that kind of story.—M. Gr 10 Up—This work reprints volumes 24-36 of the original comic series in a gorgeous hardcover edition. Yorick Brown and his capuchin monkey, Ampersand, are the lone male survivors of a planet-wide "gendercide." The loss of 48 percent of the population has thrown much of the planet into chaos, creating dangerous conditions for everyone—especially the only man alive. Yorick makes his way to San Francisco, to Dr. Mann, who is trying to find the cause and cure for the male plague. Agent 355 shadows him and protects him from a variety of spies, fanatics, criminals, and nuts who would stand in his way. When Ampersand is kidnapped and whisked off to Japan, they must take to the seas to try and find him. The artwork is stunning, featuring the original strips and cover work. Muted tones and changing palettes are expertly used to convey mood and tone. The highly original plot is compelling and fast moving, with plenty of action. The use of flashbacks, hallucinations, and fantasies within the story line may confuse weaker readers. Most teens will want to read the previous volumes first. Harsh language, adult situations, and occasional partial nudity make this one most appropriate for public libraries.—Anthony C. Doyle, Livingston High School, CA
