With a song featured on the Apple commercial for the new MacBook Air, Israeli singer Yael Naim found her MySpace page blowing up! Her independently released, self-titled album contains the song "New Soul," which landed in the Billboard Top Ten (a first for an Israeli solo artist) and was downloaded over 250,000 times, and an offbeat cover of Britney Spears' "Toxic." On her remarkably assured self-titled Atlantic debut, French-Israeli vocalist Yael Naim joins the ranks of inventive yet accessible performers such as Fiona Apple, Feist, and Keren Ann, offering up an album that's eclectic but never overreaching. Selected for a prominent Apple laptop ad, the buoyant piano-led single "New Soul" is the record's high point, and showcases Naim's warm, inviting voice. Other stand-out tracks include "Toxic," which recasts the Britney Spears hit as a strange lullaby, and the folk-tinged "Yashanti," one of a handful of songs sung in Hebrew or French. While many people will seek out Yael Naim for "New Soul," they'll find that whole album is worthy of adoration and acclaim.
Rolling Stone - Will Hermes
...the high point is a stripped-down, slow-motion, kinda-brilliant cover of Britney's "Toxic" that reads, in light of recent headlines, like a sad love note to a wayward childhood friend.
Entertainment Weekly - Emily Shur
Naim's self-titled American debut shows off her high, quavering voice and gift for piano-based melody.

    One of the greatest albums

After reading some of the previous reviews, I wasn't sure whether I wanted to buy this CD. I loved her MacBook Air commercial song, New Soul, so I bought it anyways...and it's not an action I regret in the least. Her album combines the Hebrew, English and French languages beautifully. Her melodies are pure and down-to-earth, and her voice is soothing. I haven't found a track on her CD that I haven't liked. She has become one of my favorite artists. I can't wait until her next CD!

    Wonderful

The other songs are ones that I find rather boring, while New Soul tops my chart. You may recognize it from the Mac Book Air commercial. If you want easy listening, jazzy, rock, pop, or etc. New Soul is what you need.

    double edge sword...

i loved new soul since i first saw the commercial, so when i finally got my hands on the album i was really excited. but when i listened to the record, i was kind of let down. most of the tracks are in hebrew, which doesn't make them bad (the music & the melody behind them are outstanding) but i like to be able to understand what i am listening to. if you are able to get past it not being in english, then you should definitely pick up the record. if not and you are just looking for new soul, go to itunes.
