Introduction

The first five years were the search 'n' surf era for the Web. So many websites, so many places to visit—why, there might be 15 or 20 that touched on any single question! The abundance of this new Internet was a marvel, its generosity irresistible. The latest era, however, is fast losing patience with that very abundance. What was once so thrilling is becoming the problem, which is so often the way. There are too many websites cluttering up the route to the clear answers. Web users of today are even starting to distrust the generosity—perhaps you've noticed the average website promising so much more than it actually delivers.

Perhaps you've noticed, too, though, that a handful of websites in any category provide even more than they promise, overflowing with information, ideas, and opportunities. Those are the ones we selected for this book: the lively sites, rife with updated information. We especially like interactive sites—ones that invite you to do more than just read. Those that can be intelligently customized to not only show you what to think about your finances, but how to think about them. Sites with these characteristics indicate the choices you have and the priorities you should set, and they do so more vividly than any book, talk, or television program could. That's the kind of site we searched out to feature.

If a website is like a single word, standing by itself, then a sentence is bound to be better. This book, the Yahoo! Ultimate Guide to Finance and Money on the Web, uses websites in sentences by addressing each question about finance as a multi-step process.

Anyone who is looking for amutual fund, for example, will find three steps on our chapter, which map the best route through the Web on that subject. The sites in the first step describe the various categories of mutual funds. Those in the second step hone in on making a specific selection, with recommendations, ratings, and stock-screening tools. The third step in the chapter describes the best sites for keeping up-to-date with your funds: featuring news, trends, and other current information that helps you make sure an investment remains as effective in the future as it was the day it was purchased.

The descriptions of the sites in this book show specifically and clearly how you can make the best use of each. Website descriptions that are vague or general leave more of the work to you, forcing you to go to the site and try to find your way through it. That's not worthwhile. And so we don't merely cite our sites, we include directions for use.

With an array of websites selected so that they fit together like sentences, and descriptions that give you a true recipe for success with each of them, the Yahoo! Ultimate Guide to Finance and Money on the Web is a new kind of a book for the next era of the Internet.

Keep in mind as you use your Ultimate Guide that you needn't utilize every single site in each of our steps. We included enough sites to allow a choice within each step. One point we do hope you'll notice: we favor classy, well-organized sites. Those garish ones that look like Times Square in the middle of a tornado rarely have much worthwhile information, anyway. Very few will show up in this book: We're pretty sure you prefer sites that keep to their business in an undistracting way.

More important, the sites featured in your Ultimate Guide are free, with only a very few exceptions. Therefore, just about all the tools and information needed to research personal finance on the Internet is yours for the asking.

You may also note that for the majority of the sites we have included where the site is headquartered. That goes against the prevailing attitude that Cyberspace is just a great global village (although a beautiful, humanistic thought). However it is the strict advice of the Yahoo! Ultimate Guide to Finance and Money on the Web that when it comes to your money and your finance, you know with whom you are dealing and where they can be found. We practice what we preach, in the hope of pressing that point home.

In the early planning stages for the Ultimate Guide, we thought we would concentrate on the investment information for which Yahoo! Finance is the accepted center of the Internet. However, e-commerce is another vital aspect of your money—and so is regular old boulevard commerce. In fact, spending money wisely is the first habit of finance; saving it the second; and investing it only comes third. John D. Rockefeller made the point that it is essential for every person, of any means, to spend money wisely, and so do we, by including chapters that let the Internet show the way to savvy consumerism. As you glance through chapters such as Automobiles, Travel, and Shopping, don't assume that we are telling you what car to drive, where to vacation, or what to buy. (A Bentley convertible, Vermont in the spring, and more copies of this book-respectively. I couldn't resist.) But everything else, you're about to find out by yourself-for yourself.

Great way to strealine your finance

This book helped me use the Internet to look at my finances as a whole. While I had previously paid attention to specific areas of my finances, I had never determined how they affected each other. This book really helped me do that well.
