Overview

Top Shelf is proud to present an all new, "silent" all-ages graphic novel series! Yam and his fun-loving friends live on the remote tropical island of Leche de la Luna, and are always getting mixed up in surreal adventures. Whether it's encountering cupcakes that spring to life, befriending potted flowers, or exploring the mysterious ruins on the island, this small boy in his hooded, footy pajamas always ends up having a blast with his friends.
The debut graphic novel, simply titled Yam, is anchored by the full-length story "Toy with My Dreams," in which Yam develops a crush on a girl much to old for him, but ends up being able to communicate with her in his dreams. The graphic novel also contains a full-color section and several short stories which have seen print in Nickelodeon Magazine.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Lauri Berkenkamp
Yam is a small boy with a magical backpack, a kitten friend named Marzipan Gato, and pet television. Yam and his pals go on a wide variety of adventures on the magical island of La Leche de la Luna, a place where cupcakes play fetch and flowers fall in love, get married, and start rock bands. This collection of wordless stories offer unexpected surprises: in one story, Yam lets his pet television sleep in bed next to him, but is woken up in the middle of the night by the television's scary dreams, broadcast in color. Yam sends the television out of the room, but his pet whines and scratches at the door and Yam relents, allowing the TV back into bed. The TV's dreams wake up Yam again. He finally solves the problem by bringing the remote to bed, too, and switching the channel when the television has another bad dream. In the end, both Yam and his TV are fast asleep. Each story is gentle but not saccharine, and appeals to both children and adults. While young kids will enjoy the simple plots, happy outcomes, and large-eyed, cuddly characters, adults will also appreciate how skillfully a complex narrative can be developed and presented without words. Some of the Yam stories originally appeared in Nickelodeon magazine. This is an enchanting and very enjoyable book that will appeal to readers of all ages. Reviewer: Lauri Berkenkamp

Gr 3-5

Yam is a spirited cherub of a boy dressed in a charming head-to-toe jumpsuit. He and his quirky friends cavort around the tropical island of Leche de la Luna, having surreal adventures involving friendly cupcakes, tambourine-shaking flowers, and magic potions. The wordless panels are quite effective with the tenderly drawn art powerfully conveying nuanced moments. A solid addition to any graphic novel collection.-Lauren Anduri, Brooklyn Public Library, NY

    YAM IT UP!

When the Africans (free or captive) came to America, they looked for yams which were a food staple and native only to tropical climates. Instead what they found Sweet Potatoes. Choosing the juicy one they added butter, sugar or honey, thus the expression to " Yam it up." This Yam is the real one. Corey Barba's YAM : Bite Size Chunks is a big imaginative head delight. Filled with joy and play to keep a young one busy for an afternoon.
