Overview

The first two limbs of the eight-fold path of yoga sutras—the basic text for classical yoga—are examined in this spiritual guide to the practice of yoga. Foundational to all yogic thought, they are considered to be the guidelines to the yoga way of living that free individuals to take ownership of their lives, direct them toward the fulfillment they seek, and gain the skills to choose attitude, thought, and action. The first five guidelines are referred to as the yamas—a Sanskrit word that translates to "restraints"—and encompass nonviolence, truthfulness, not stealing, nonexcess, and nonpossessiveness. The last five are referred to as the niyamas, or observances—purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study, and surrender. A self-study section at the end of each chapter may also be used by instructors for group discussion.

Tathaatsu Magazine
These guidelines will certainly motivate readers to get rid of negative habits and adopt positive values.
Light of Consciousness Magazine
Applying restraints and observances may sound limiting, but the result, as yogis have always discovered, is just the opposite: the joy of discovery, creativity, spontaneity, and being able to learn from and move past our mistakes. The author presents a gentle introduction and guidance for this powerful practice.

Highly Recommended- Yoga Guru's must check it out!!

After reading this truly inspirational yoga philosophy book. I have a new ethical guidelines in-store on how I can start living my life more completely. This book is filled with real life examples as well as tips that help explain the principles.

The Yama and Niyamas, yoga's ten ethical guidelines, are truly the foundational to living skillfully. The Yamas are five restraints that we can incorporate into our lives. These restraints include nonviolence, truthfulness, non-stealing, non-excess and non-possessiveness. We are in control of how we choose to apply these restraints in our daily living. This inward view asks us to incorporate these restraints in our thoughts as well as actions. I find it a challenge and often difficult to be consistent. The Niyamas consist of five observances designed to prepare us to interact with the outside world. They consist of purity, contentment, self-discipline, self-study and finally surrender. All designed to create balance within ourselves. Balance creates harmony within us, and harmony within naturally expresses. Yoga is a journey that we can decide to accept knowing that along the journey there will be challenges. I feel one of the keys to successfully travel down this Yoga-Road, is to make time in our lives to detoxify. We need to designate time in our daily routine to unwind and listen to our body.

    Fabulous Read!

I had heard about this book through word of mouth and decided to pick it up. I had only taken one yoga course before through the college I attended and loved it (the teacher recommended this book)! As I started reading 'The Yamas and Niyamas' I was taking notes, highlighting - so excited! The way Ms. Adele writes about these yoga ethics makes even a novice like me able to understand and grasp the meanings. This book is also inspiring - helping me to make decisions on how to change how I live and view/react to situations. It is a gem of a book for truly anyone!
