Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
After the traditional verse of this patriotic song, Hoberman has created several silly and fun to sing verses. Westcott's zany illustrations are full of slapstick humor as they show a horse dancing with a chicken, and a poodle serving macaroni and cheese to the customers at the restaurant called "Yankee Doodle's Noodles" The verses are fun and easy to sing and the drawings are certain to elicit giggles. This is part of the popular "Sing Along Stories" series and would be fun to use in a story hour. The music is included in the front of the book. On the back end papers are five activities for children that include rhyming, counting, and planning a parade. The activities were prepared by Pat Scales. Warning to parents: your children may develop a hunger for a big bowl of macaroni and cheese after "singing" this book! 2004, Megan Tingley Books/Little Brown and Company, Ages 3 to 7.

PreS-Gr 2-This installment in a series of stories based on children's songs features that macaroni-wearing horseman. As Yankee Doodle rides his pony through town, he is joined by a girl "A-walking with a poodle," a smiling toad, and an old rooster "A-singing cock-a-doodle." By the time the tale (well, song) ends, they have opened up a restaurant called Yankee Doodle's Noodles. Westcott's bright and cheery illustrations include funny details such as the poodle sneezing, the pony dancing with the rooster, and a lightbulb over one character's head when an idea strikes. The festive macaroni-and-cheese endpapers feature the music and original lyrics in the front and a list of ideas called "More fun with Yankee Doodle" in the back. With the imaginative range of rhymes and the vibrant illustrations, this book will be oodles of fun for storytime (with the obvious craft idea of macaroni necklaces).-Bina Williams, Bridgeport Public Library, CT Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

This is a very fun and engaging sing-aloud book. My 3-year old daughter has enjoyed the books in this Sing-Along Stories series of books (this is our third book). The illustrations are so cute, colorful and funny. The book begins to the familiar lyrics and tune of Yankee Doodle and then extra verses are added to weave a silly story. As it is a classic song, purists might worry that the imaginative embellishment of the original might ruin the song entirely. However, I've found that these books only make the classics even more memorable and fun for little ones.

My son is 3 and he absolutely loves this book. We sing it and point at the pictures. It has made the rotation of books that we read and he reads along it very well. He loves the song and the rhymes. It such a great idea to continue the song with a funny story. I am in constant look out for more of these types of books!

Yankee Doodle is a big hit in our house. My 2 year old loves the song and the creative way the author weaves a story line into the lyrics is fun for adults to read/sing aloud. Be warned... you WILL be singing this long after the kids are in bed :)
