Overview

In their bustling New York City yarn shop Julie Carles and Jordana Jacobs—a.k.a. the Yarn Girls—have helped thousands of new and lapsed knitters rediscover the pleasures of knitting. Forget frumpy worsted wools and tiny needles; here are the gorgeous, wearable styles you’ve been looking for, with patterns that knit up so fast even inexperienced knitters can start a project on Saturday and wear it to work Monday morning. Made on big needles (sizes 9 to 36) and with a wide range of the chunky, luxurious new yarns that are now available, they couldn’t be easier to create, or more fun to wear.

The Yarn Girls have selected thirty of their most popular basic-but-beautiful projects in a range of must-have styles, from trendy funnel-necks and classic cardigans to sexy tanks. Each project includes pointers to ensure that the finished project will fit properly and look like a million bucks. There are also patterns for creating accessories such as hats and scarves, as well as something for the guys and cozy throws for the home. Each pattern is designed to reinforce the fundamentals of knitting and help tentative knitters gain confidence. Clearly illustrated sections on techniques, plus a glossary and the Yarn Girls’ helpful tips throughout, practically guarantee a successful outcome the very first time.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This stylish and straightforward guide to knitting comes just in time for chilly autumn nights. Geared toward novices and "rusty" knitters alike, the book covers the basics (how to cast on, how to purl) before going on to offer klutz-proof sweater patterns as well as simple stand-bys such as hats, scarves and throws. Co-owners of a Manhattan yarn studio, Carles and Jacobs sprinkle the book with encouragement and tales of knitting success. Every few pages, a little bubble cautions the reader on potential pitfalls (think Pop-Up Knitting); "some [advice] may seem obvious," these chipper ladies write, "but in the end, they will save you from knitting a sweater that would fit the Jolly Green Giant or, worse, one with armhole shaping only in the back!" Each pattern is illustrated from different angles in well-styled photographs, and personal anecdotes introduce each pattern, resulting in an instructive book that's also an unusually engaging read. Color photographs and illustrations throughout. (Sept.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Has some useful instructions and interesting patterns, but I have yet to be inspired enough to make anything from this book.

I've been knitting for 1 1/2 years and I've made 4 projects from this book. People always compliment me on my projects. I've used this book to teach four friends at work how to knit. The explanations are great, the pictures are beautiful, and the patterns are easy.

As a beginner, thsi book has proven to be one of the best in explanations of patterns and the simplicity of the instructions. It is very well written and I highly recommend it for anyone that loves to knit!! I sure hope they publish another book. The best part is that the patterns are of items that people would wear or use now a days and they are not 'outdated'... Buy this book - you won't be sorry!!!!

I am a beginning knitter and within 2 weeks, I knitted my very first sweater, and it's wearable! I found this book inspiring and I love the beautiful yarns they use throughout. The one drawback I have found is that the yarns used are all very expensive. Beware, there are no cheap projects in this book. However, the patterns are all easy to understand and look so gorgeous, you can't help but want to make them, no matter the sacrifice... The projects in this book do not require anything more than 1 pair of knitting needles, yarn, ruler, and a tapestry needle. This really is a book of simple knits. Imagine my shock when I saw a knitting pattern at the store for a simple-looking sweater that required all kinds of needles and other accessories I've never even seen before. I think this book will help you get the basics down, and allow you to make some great projects, but in order to further explore knitting, you will have to find another book. But I'm definitely hooked!

I've been a rabid knitter for several years and I've always been a little disappointed by the amount of frumpy patterns available. This book is completely different. It is filled simple and helpful instructions and trully stylish knits. I've already knit two projects and everyone I know has asked me where I bought them. They look like I bought them at a designer boutique. Even better, none of them are that hard to knit. If you like to knit or want to learn, this book is a must.
