Overview

Predating the release of Joshua Redman’s Elastic by a few months, this cooperative recording features the same personnel: Redman on saxophone, Sam Yahel on organ, and Brian Blade on drums. As warm-ups go, this is special. All three players are inspired by the pared-down instrumentation; Redman in particular plays with the invention and passion of his early breakout in the 1990s. Blade, heard recently to great effect with Wayne Shorter, and the up-and-coming Yahel are no slouches either; their always absorbing contributions are integral to the project, and at no time does this recording sound merely like “Joshua Redman-and-rhythm section.” The still-young saxophonist has tried different musical approaches since coming to fame, but this interactive trio is among his most successful outings. It’s little wonder that having cut this exhilarating album, these three compatriots decided to stay together and keep the music evolving. Elastic proves that this was a wise move.

Downbeat
With such a basic setup, the magic happens in the interaction between players, and Yaya3 clearly revels in group vibe.
