Overview

The Year-Round Garden is a unique, easy-to-use gardening book that shows readers how to combine plants to create a stunning year-round effect. While other gardening books often focus on planting for different seasons, this book suggests practical plant combinations that work across seasons, the result being a garden that adapts for the better with every passing season.

The opening section is broken down into seasons, with profiles of the most appropriate plants for each time of year. Every plant will have a brief description and a list of companion plants that will either complement the featured plant during its main period of interest, or will prolong the interest for several seasons.

The middle section shows plant schemes in action, using sequential photography from specially planted gardens to demonstrate how mixing the profiled plants together really does extend the garden's vitality beyond seasonal ups and downs.

A detailed chart at the back of the book provides easily accessible cultivation notes on all the profiled plants, from hardiness and soil issues, to optimum height and pruning requirements.

A practical book for all gardening enthusiasts, The Year-Round Garden provides hundreds of planting ideas. Readers can plan their gardens in advance and to enjoy their outside space 12 months of the year.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Let's face it: Most of our gardens are one- or two-season wonders. Master British gardener Geoff Stebbins knows how to synchronize plant combinations so that your garden looks stunning all year round. Though Stebbins trained at the Royal Botanic Gardens, his book targets a wide audience. The Year-Round Garden begins with a seasonal section, with profiles of plants most appropriate for each time of the year. Each entry contains a brief description and a list of companion plants that either complement the featured plant or will prolong the interest for several seasons. A useful photographic section presents plant schemes in sequence and the book also contains a detailed chart providing cultivation notes on all profiled plants.
Library Journal
These two calendar-themed books, written by experienced and much-honored U.K. gardeners, highlight contrasting aspects of gardening: there's the verdant beauty that plants produce, and then there's the beastly amount of work done to bring about their splendor. A plant enthusiast's wish book, The Year-Round Garden presents full-color-pictures of plants accompanied by short narratives that describe notable features, advise about growing conditions and maintenance, and identify companion plants to carry the garden from season to season. The entries are organized by season, beginning with spring, then categorized by plant type, such as bulbs and shrubs; botanical names occur in alphabetical order. Because there is no cross reference by common name, this title is most suited to committed gardeners. Many-but not all-varieties suggested are available in the United States. The Gardener's Year, on the other hand, sees the garden as serious ongoing work. Although Titchmarsh never neglects the appeal of particular plants, his emphasis is on what to do, when to do it, and, most important, how and why. Even gardeners already familiar with how a lawn complements a border-or those not inclined to drying flowers and chili peppers-will find much of interest here. Myriad details, from getting orchids to rebloom to storing leftover seeds, make this book insightful and rewarding. In a garden-book market where repetitions of mainstay advice are common, these titles show to advantage; both books should find eager readers among avid U.S. gardeners.-Jennifer Burek Pierce, Indiana Univ.
