Overview

Linnea Bradenborg expects to find culture and excitement in Alamo, North Dakota, where she's recently been hired as the new schoolteacher. Instead, she finds a sparse little town in the middle of nowhere. Better yet, her train is met by a cantankerous wheat farmer named Theodore Westgaard who doesn't bother to hide his displeasure when he discovers that L.I. Brandenborg is a woman and not the man he was expecting. Westgaard thinks twice about bringing Linnea home to live with him, but he soon realizes that he has no choice. All of the town's past schoolteachers have lived with the Westgaard family--made up of Theodore, his mother, and his teenaged son--due to their farm being located very near the schoolhouse, and so Theodore allows Linnea into his home. But who could have guessed that this young, independent woman would soon find her way into the handsome farmer's heart? A compelling classic to be read again and again, Years is a fitting tribute to the pioneer schoolteachers who braved many hardships to share the gift of knowledge with countless children. --Maudeen Wachsmith

Meet the Author

LaVyrle Spencer was born in Minnesota, where she attended high school and met and married her high school sweetheart, Dan Spencer — a decision she calls the wisest choice of her life.
Although she showed a flair for writing during high school, LaVyrle didn't begin her first novel until she was in her thirties, working as a teacher's aide at Osseo Junior High School. Spencer decided to try transferring to paper a recurring dream she was having about a story based on her grandmother's lifestyle on a Minnesota farm. She awoke at 4:00 a.m. one morning, and as Spencer recalls, "you think that you can do anything at 4:00 a.m. I wrote the first half a page in a three-ring notebook with a ball-point pen." She finished that first novel, The Fulfillment, and it was published in 1979.
LaVyrle Spencer could be a character in one of her own bestselling novels, as she has experienced as much love, pain, and bliss as any of her characters. And like her heroines she is a charming mix of fire and warmth, strength, savvy and soft-heartedness. Her books are family love stories, and the characters in her novels aren't perfect, they are real people with real problems. Before they live happily ever after they must overcome some sort of adversity — pregnancy, divorce, a lengthy separation, the loss of a loved one — and then undergo a catharsis. Along the way there are moments of anger, happiness and self- revelation. The stories center on themes of abiding love, family ties and strength in difficult times. According to Spencer, "the trademark of my books is mending relationships, showing people how to mend relationships."
Whether set in the Old West of the 1880s, or today, in suburban Minnesota, opening a Spencer novel means seeing love in a new light, and meeting characters so real it's all you can do not to climb into the pages yourself.
LaVyrle and Dan Spencer live in a beautiful Victorian house in Stillwater, Minnesota, and the Spencers often escape to their rustic log cabin deep in the Minnesota woods. LaVyrle's hobbies include gardening, travel, gourmet cooking, entertaining, playing bass guitar and the electronic piano, photography, and observing nature.

    SUPERB!

IT was a definate tear jerker at times but the way that Spencer describes two loves that are far apart in age is amazing. At first I thought it dragged and I wasnt convinced I'd like it until my mom made me read further and after that push I just couldn't put it down it was awesome! I definatly have to say this is my favorite yet and I wish it would be made into a movie!

    Enjoyable read!

Enjoyed reading this book.....however there was an annoying amount of typos and syntax errors. This probably due to printers, not the author.

    Realistic romance

I love that Spencer's characters seem so real, they are not perfect and it makes them much more interesting.

    Wonderful

I have read and re-read LaVyrle Spencer's books over the years and never tire of them. This is one of my favorites, because it does not end at the wedding.

I love her stories because the plots have depth, more than just boy meets girl and get married. I also, love that the intimacy between the couple isn't trashy.

    I love this book.

Not a trashy romance novel. It is a story about love, family, and healing. The characters are well done, and very "real."

    more from this reviewer

    Highly Recommended

This has to be the best LaVyrle Spencer book I have ever read. I cannot get enough of it. I have read it 5 times in a row. I finish it, then pick it up and read it again. The cast of characters is unbelievably awesome. The visuals are incredible. It sets the imagination on a fancy. I will probably read it again and again.

    Wonderful Love Story

This is one my favorites by Lavyrle Spencer; characters you care about, an interesting setting and a touching storyline. This book made me laugh and cry. I also really like how most of her novels are set in Minnesota (this one is set in North Dakota) since I live there; it's fun to recognize locations and towns the author is referring to. Spencer is a master at romance; I've read all of her books and my favorites include: Twice Loved, Vows, November of the Heart, and That Camden Summer. If you enjoy this book, you might also like: Shades of Twilight and After the Night by Linda Howard. Tami Hoag also writes wonderful, suspenseful romantic mysteries; I especially like her older books.

    My favorite book

Just finished reading this book for about the 7th time. My all time favorite book, though I really enjoy a few other Spencer books also...several of which are re-again books, in my opinion. I enjoy the way the characters are described, and always feel that I know them well by the time I'm done with her books. In 'Years', I can really feel the pain that Teddy and Linnea go through! I think this book would make an excellent movie.

I just read this book for the second time and it was just as enjoyable as the first time. I just love this book and would love a sequel.

    Highland novel addict

This was my first book by this author. It was a truly wonderful story with unforgettable characters. There were passages that were so heartwrenching it was difficult to hold back the tears. Every emotion imaginable could be felt by the reader. I emitted a great sigh upon reading the last page, my heart was still in turmoil, confused as to whether or not I should be feeling a contented happiness or a grave sadness. I truly loved this book.

    LaVyrle Spencer is the best!

There are no other words: I loved this book. What a beautiful story. What wonderful people. It's with great sadness that the last page has been turned.

    I Was Hooked!

I honestly didn't think I'd read this book. I didn't think it would be very interesting, but I was SO wrong. It's one of the sweetest love stories out there, timeless in it's beauty and originality.

    Very Disappointing

I enjoy many of Ms Spencer's books, but I found this one to be both unlikely and depressing. The title is appropriate...it felt like it took years to get through it.
