Overview

"When a man turns coward in the Space Guard, he rates a little box of yellow mud from his comrades-and from his girl friend too!"

William P. McGivern is well known for his hard-boiled detective and police action pieces, such as Night of the Juggler and Odds Against Tomorrow. He also wrote television screenplays in his later years including scripts for the TV series “Ben Casey,” “Adam-12,” and “Kojak” and the William Castle film “I Saw What You Did” (1965).

However, he also wrote many short fiction stories and novellas for the science fiction and adventure pulp magazines throughout the 1940s and 1950s. This short story (approx. 6,500 words), “Yellow Mud for Cowards” was originally published in Amazing Stories magazine in September 1941 with the illustration credited to Ralph Johnson.

"P. F. Costello" was a pseudonym used by William P. McGivern. William P. McGivern used several pseudonyms when writing his short science fiction stories for Amazing Stories and Fantastic Adventures magazines. Using a pseudonym, he could have more than one story appear in the issues.
