Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

More child-friendly than last year's 600 Black Spots, the new addition to the series that began with One Red Dot is just as much an overture to exploring art. A yellow square hides in plain sight in or within the paper engineering on each spread; sometimes, the creation of the yellow square is entirely up to the reader. On the first spread, for example, that square exists only when the reader peers through a die-cut while holding the book at the correct angle-in other words, perspective is everything. Captions are variously enigmatic ("The fog of art/ and a yellow square," for an elaborate windows-like construction topped in vellum) or childlike ("The cow jumped over the moon/ and a yellow square," for an abstract paper sculpture). As before, Carter confines himself to primary colors, black and white; even with this palette, he alludes to a number of artists, among them Agam, whose name he spells out in a tribute piece; Christo, in a trio of wrapped structures; Miro; and Calder, via a trapeze with rotating flaps that stand in for performers. Not all the spreads are equally impressive, but the best are dazzlers. Ages 3-up. (Sept.)

Children's Literature
Moving beyond his bug books, Carter has been exploring "a range of feelings and interactive visual experiences." He has produced a wide variety of pop-ups with increasingly difficult challenges in his One Red Dot, Blue 2, and 600 Black Spots. Now the task for the reader is to find the yellow square on each complex double page spread. "Paper noodles wrestle…and a yellow square," is first. Then come "The fog of art…" "Uncle Theo's trapeze," and "All wrapped up…" The spectacular pop-ups overwhelm the few words. Not only papers, but also threads and mesh cloth are incorporated to make things move and spin. Some sculptures require the reader to begin the action. All tease as they ask us to complete the stories, add the "feelings," inspired by the active visuals, but they are all probably too complex for the reader to copy, while inspiring repeated viewing. Gr 1-6

Carter takes paper engineering to new creative heights in this fourth in a pop-up series that combines imagination-stirring visuals with open-ended texts and seek-and-find elements. Here, readers look for a yellow square incorporated into illustrations in primary colors that burst with clever innovations and visual effects. The shape appears in various hiding spots: on a tab that spins around "Uncle Theo's trapeze" (a bar raised into the air by two triangular supports), within a paper swirl that lifts-slinky like-into a tall spiral and then (amazingly) recoils back to a flat page, and as part of a giant 3-D "Doodle on white" sculpture. A removable square with a cut-out middle can be peered through to make yellow strips look like yellow boxes. "Square tubes bloom" as card-stock stalks blossom up from a blue background, each displaying a delicate flower, evoking the solidity and fluidity of coral. The pop-ups incorporate interesting materials-yarn, red netting (think vegetable packaging), and a translucent waxy paper that allows readers to view shapes through "the fog of art"-possibly inspiring collages or sculptures made from found objects. This book will fuel creative thought, initiate discussion about artistic perception, and elicit plain old "wows" from kids.-Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal
