Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Like other ShadowClan cats, Yellowkit has always dreamed of being a warrior, but as she begins her apprenticeship, she makes a discovery that is intensely disturbingly: Her paws are not those of a warrior, but of a healer. As she reluctantly begins her training as a medicine cat, her dreams are haunted by a prophecy she cannot completely understand and a sense of dark foreboding. What she does not yet know is that her fate conceals a secret that could destroy all the warrior Clans. Erin Hunter's fierce feline classic continues in high style.

Meet the Author

Erin Hunter is inspired by a love of cats and a fascination with the ferocity of the natural world. In addition to having great respect for nature in all its forms, Erin enjoys creating rich mythical explanations for animal behavior. She is also the author of the bestselling Seekers and Survivors series.

Biography

Erin Hunter is the nom de plume of three British writers who create enthralling, animal-centric YA fantasies in the tradition of Brian Jacques's Redwall books. In 2003, they launched their bestselling Warriors series with Into the Wild, the story of a domesticated kitten who leaves the comforts of his human home to join a family of feral cats living in the woods. Introducing a captivating world where rival cat clans struggle for survival, the book was an immediate sensation with animal- and adventure-loving preteens. Since its debut, Warriors has become a genuine publishing phenomenon, spawning a string of six-book miniseries, each with its own distinct story arc.

The Erin Hunter collaboration is an unusual but highly successful one. Characters and story ideas emanate from editor Victoria Holmes, who keeps track of previous plot lines, ensures continuity, and coordinates the details of a complex and growing cast of characters. Kate Cary and Cherith Baldry take turns writing individual books; then everything is vetted again through Holmes, who checks carefully to make sure the stories are told in a single, unified voice. With different writing styles at work, this would seem a daunting task. However, in a 2006 interview, Holmes explained her modus operandi: "I think of it as being able to "speak Erin Hunter", like speaking a different language, and after working on [so many] scripts, I know pretty much at once if a line or phrase doesn't sound right."

Although the Erin Hunter books are written for young readers, they do not shy away from difficult material. The animals face life-threatening dangers and experience pain, grief, and loss -- sometimes even treachery within their own ranks. But the authors are always careful to reinforce positive messages about family, friendship, loyalty, and love. Independently, Holmes, Cary, and Baldry stay busy with their own writing and editing projects; but in 2008, they reunited for a second animal fantasy series. Seekers: The Quest Begins features a trio of bears from different species (black, polar, and grizzly), who join together for an adventure-filled odyssey that will change their lives forever.

Good To Know

Fun facts about "Erin Hunter" and the Warrior books, plus advice for aspiring writers:
Cherith Baldry and Kate Cary have always loved cats -- and writing fantasy stories! Cherith is particularly interested in the stories of King Arthur, with all those glorious battles, knights, and a courtly code of behavior. Kate is fascinated by animal interaction and the way you can read all sorts of hidden motivation into what cats do. She's also not afraid of describing the goriest scenes!

Says Victoria Holmes, "I love being one of the Erins and frequently dream of being a cat running through a forest when I am coming up with new story lines. Teaming up with Kate and Cherith on the Warriors books is an unconventional way of working, but we love writing the books together and it means we can produce them much faster than a single writer could."

They came up with the single name, Erin Hunter, to avoid confusing their readers by having books from the same series filed in different places on the bookshelves.

Erin's advice for aspiring writers: "Read, read, and read some more! Make sure you read a wide variety of stories: fantasy stories teach you about making up completely new worlds, crime-solving stories teach you about handling a complicated plot, stories with lots of characters teach you how to describe relationships. Also, write as many stories as you can, even if no one else reads them. And remember that the best inspiration comes from what's around you -- Kate and Cherith go for long walks through the woods to find new locations for the cats to explore. They also spend hours watching their cats -- and other people -- to see how they behave in certain situations."

Yellowfang's Secret- The Life of a ShadowClan Medicane Cat

Yellowfang's Secret is the fifth Super Edition in the awesome Warriors series by Erin Hunter. This book chronicles the life of former ShadowClan warrior Yellowfang. Like almost the other Warriors books, Yellowfang's Secret is an amazing book I know I will read time and time again.
We learn in this book firstly about Yellowkit and her littermates Nutkit and Rowankit. They train as apprentices, and eventually become warriors—Yellowfang, Nutwhisker, and Rowanberry. Yellowfang is then told by medicane cat Sagewhisker that she is destinied to be a medicane cat. Yellowfang, however, is uncertain about this role—she has always dreamed of being a warrior, and has fallen in love with fellow warrior Raggedpelt ((the medicane cat code forbids med cats to take mates)). Despite the action and adventure that I love in Warriors, this book was a bit disapointing compared to previous ones.
First of all, we find out it Yellowfang's Secret that Yellowfang has the ability to sense other cats' injuries—forcing her to leave the life of a warrior and queen to follow the path of a medicane cat apprentice. However, in the Power of Three and Omen of the Stars, it states quite clearly that Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing's powers are unique and beyond all other cats—including the warriors in StarClan. If they have this power that no other cat can posses, how come Yellowfang has a similar power when she isn't Firestar's kin?
Second, this book doesn't reflect the first four books of the Warriors series, in which Yellowfang is ThunderClan's medicane cat. Her personality changes a LOT in the very last chapter, and swaps to the trait of a totally different cat. The other charecters in this story are also hard to develop, as some of them are hardly mentioned at all. I understand we have a lot of story to get through, but the other cats are skimmed over and we don't get to know anyone (besides Yellowfang, Raggedpelt, Brokentail, and Foxheart). In other Super Editions (such as Bluestar's Prophecy and Crookedstar's Promise), all the charecters, not just the important ones, are well described and come alive in the story.
Finally, Raggedpelt and Yellowfang are mates while Yellowfang is a medicane cat apprentice, and only break up after Yellowfang becomes a full medicane cat. They both act like this is okay—that medicane cat apprentices are allowed to have mates. However, look at Leafpool! While she was an apprentice, Cinderpelt constantly warned her that medicane cats AND their apprentices are not allowed to have mates!
Other than these minor flaws in the story, Yellowfang's Secret is overall an amazing and suspenseful book. I would highly recomend to any reader who enjoys fantasy and adventure stories about cats. I would also recommend reading Erin Hunter's other series Seekers (about three bears searching for a new home) and Survivors (about a lone dog forms a dog pack). I hope this review was helpful.

Awesome Book; just couldn't put it down!

I started reading the "Warriors" series by Erin Hunter back in the 7th grade in Fall 2005. I am now 6 months away from being 21, & I am still just as much in love with them now as I was then.

Erin Hunter writes awesome books. I know for a fact that I will never out grow her books. They will ALWAYS be on my bookself. ALWAYS.

Im disappointed, i came here looking for book reviews! Not some stupid roleplays! If you want to roleplay go somewhere else! Theres like, a million websites out there specifically made for rps. Go there instead! Nobody wants to see them here!

People really need to be moderating these reviews. If i was a moderator, I would delete your roleplays as soon as possible.

Seriously people are you that immature?
