More About This Book

Overview

Includes excerpts from The Discovery of Yellowstone Park: The Washburn Expedition. Around the campfire in September 1870, a small group of men who had just spent more than a month wandering in what they called "Wonderland" came up with an amazing idea: Let's work to make this amazing landscape into a park that belongs to all of the American people. Which they did. Now, a contemporary landscape photographer's color images accompany excerpts from the journal of that trek, published as The Discovery of Yellowstone Park by expedition member Nathaniel Pitt Langford. Text and pictures combine to give readers the same experience of discovery that those nineteenth-century explorers enjoyed.

    This book is beautiful.

This book contains only breathtakingly beautiful photos of Yellowstone Park. The only writing in it is a very interesting comment on each page from the diary of a member of the Washburn Expedition of 1870. Very interesting comments about the thrill of seeing the incredible beauty and strangeness of Yellowstone for the first time, and Peterson's pictures show that this beauty is still there to see and marvel at, even today.
Everyone should see and thrill to the beauty of Yellowstone at least once--the incredible hot springs and geysers, the abundant animal life, the calm meadows with meandering rivers, the mountains, and so much more. You will want to go again and again, and this beautiful book will take you back in memory every time you open it's pages.
