Children's Literature - Cindy K. Schofield
Yellowstone National Park is the world's first national park and it is never too early for children to read about its history, habitats, and animals. This small book does a good job of introducing youngsters to concepts associated with the park, and conservation generally. It is organized into two-page chapters that summarize the park's history and describe the wildlife, flora, and wetlands in various regions of the park. Beautiful photographs enhance the text throughout and are especially helpful in the sections about special animal populations—wolves, coyotes, and bison. The wonders of Yellowstone are not left out and include the waterfalls, geysers, and hot springs (and a summary of the Junior Ranger program). Though the book is too short to need one, it includes an index which adults can use to show their youngsters how to navigate through a text, and it also has a glossary which defines words that are in bold print throughout the book. This is a solid introduction to a national treasure that young readers will enjoy having read to them, or reading themselves. Reviewer: Cindy K. Schofield
