Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Like his Hug and Tall, Yes by Jez Alborough stars adorable Bobo the chimp, who says, "Yes, yes" to bathtime and "No, no" to bedtime. But with the help of a couple friends, Bobo winds up safely asleep with his mother. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Sara Lorimer
Bobo, the baby monkey previously seen in Hug, is happy to take a bath when his mom (or his dad, or her mom, or her dad; Bobo's sex, and that of the adult, are not specified) tells him to. "Yes," he says, and splashes in the pond. "Yes yes yes," Bobo says, but when mom says its bedtime "no, no, NO, NO, NO!" The patient adult tells Bobo "bye-bye," and goes to hide behind a tall plant while Bobo sulks in the pond. A lizard and an elephant join Bobo in the pond, splashing and playing, with Bobo saying yes and no at each step. Before long, Bobo yawns rubs his eyes and falls asleep on the sand. "Shhh," says the lizard, and the elephant gently picks up the sleeping monkey. "Bedtime for Bobo," says his mom, tucking him in, while the lizard and the monkey say "yes." Young children will enjoy shouting "no!" and "yes!" along with the animals, and it is a sweet story for bedtime. Alborough's simple, cheery, and expressive illustrations tell the story well.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-The irrepressible chimp is back, and this time he doesn't want to go to bed. When Mama tells Bobo that it is bathtime, he enthusiastically responds "yes, yes, yes," but when she announces bedtime, he throws a tantrum, utilizing every toddler's favorite word: "no!" Mama walks away, leaving her son pouting until two friends come along and play with him until he falls asleep. The elephant takes the sleeping chimp to Mama's waiting arms and all is well. While some people may find the result of Bobo's tantrum-that he gets to play until he falls asleep-somewhat troubling, the large, colorful pictures are so delightful that children's enjoyment will outweigh most concerns. Preschoolers and beginning readers alike will be drawn to the cartoonlike, multimedia illustrations, which are broken up nicely into panels to lend motion and flow to the story. The generous size of the appealing illustrations and simplicity of the text will lend themselves well to group and one-on-one reading. While not an essential purchase, many libraries will want to say "YES" to this pleasant addition.-Amy Lilien-Harper, The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
In Alborough's third book for young children about Bobo, the young chimp says "yes," repeatedly, to taking a bath. He then says "no," just as emphatically, to going to bed. Bobo's mother knowingly acquiesces and moves to the sidelines as Bobo proceeds to frolic in the river with a young lizard and a baby elephant. Inevitably, Bobo asleep, and he's delivered home to his waiting mother, accompanied by the lizard and nestled in the elephant's trunk. "Bedtime for Bobo," his mother says. "Yes," answer his new friends. Minimal text (the focus is on the words "yes" and "no") makes this perfect for the youngest children, and the cheerful gouache-on-board illustrations lovingly depict the affable animals. Perhaps the story would be stronger if it were apparent that Bobo's mother felt assured of his safety throughout-readers see her looking alarmed when the lizard appears, and then do not see her again until she collects her son-but as it stands, this is a soothing bedtime tale with warm, appealing and energetic characters.
