Overview

THIS IS OUR MOMENT

“This is our time—to put people back to work and open doors of opportunity for our kids; to restore prosperity and promote the cause of peace; to reclaim the American dream and reaffirm that fundamental truth—that out of many, we are one; that while we breathe, we hope; and where we are met with cynicism and doubt, and those who tell us that we can’t, we will respond with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of a people: Yes, we can.”

— President Barack Obama, Acceptance Speech; Chicago, IL; November 4, 2008

Born in the U.S.A., the son of an African father and an American mother, a boy who spent his childhood in Indonesia and Hawaii, Barack Obama is truly a citizen of the world. In kindergarten, he wrote an essay titled, “I Want to Become President,” and now, with his fierce optimism, exuberant sense of purpose and determination, and above all, his belief that change can happen, Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the United States, has made that dream come true.

Garen Thomas takes us through the life of Barack Obama, from his struggle to fit in with his classmates, and concern about not knowing his biological father, through his term as an Illinois senator, and the long campaign for president, to his historic victory.

Editorial Reviews

Booklist
[An] adulatory profile of the presidential candidate’s meteoric rise.
People Magazine
A smoothly written account of the candidate’s life.
USA Today
This Obama-friendly biography was first published in June and has been updated with 32 additional pages on his historic campaign and election...it's a useful, clearly written summary of an amazing story, both personally and politically. Garen Thomas, a children's book editor and author has done an admirable job...
VOYA
The updated edition of this bestselling biography of Barack Obama covers his life from birth through the 2008 Presidential election. It is a fast-paced story that paints the president as a real person who consistently broke barriers but at the same time has his own clear flaws. For instance, Obama was one of only two black children in his class in Hawaii, and he was the first African American to head the Harvard Law Review. On the other hand, he almost did not go to college because of problems with drugs and he has smoked cigarettes much of his adult life. The author is clearly an Obama fan, but this fact is made clear from the beginning in the preface. This biography is clear and concise enough for anyone from well-read fifth graders through adults. A few lines, however, such as the explanation that England is a country in Europe, might unnecessarily turn off older readers. Also the storyteller feel of the early chapters is lost a bit in the last chapter, which covers the 2008 election. Details of various primaries and presidential and vice presidential opponents make this chapter feel less a biography of one man and more a history of the election. Nevertheless these minor issues do not take away from the fact that it is a nice, fast introduction to the nation's current president for those who want more than an encyclopedia article and less than the autobiographical volumes and speeches. Reviewer: Beth Karpas
School Library Journal
Gr 6–9—An update of a book published in 2008, with a new final chapter reflecting events since then. Thomas clearly chronicles his subject's experiences with his grandparents, parents, and the cultures in which he grew up. Much is made of the stories about his absent father. The author portrays the sole meeting between Barack (at age 10) and his dad vividly, leaving readers with an understanding of this young man's confusion about his heritage and place in society. Thomas then recounts Obama's schooling, his eventual contact and involvement with black contemporaries, and their ideas. His exposure to prejudice takes all forms, including neglect from fellow Kenyans while he visited there. The last six chapters succinctly trace his rise to the presidency. Readers are left with little doubt that Obama believes in the possibility of change—in the possibility of looking at the world through the eyes of humanity, not "different colors of humanity." The volume concludes with a map depicting Obama as a citizen of the world due to his heritage. Photographs and quotations throughout the book bring Obama and his philosophy to life.—Joanne K. Cecere, Monroe-Woodbury High School, Central Valley, NY

Recommended...but can be a little dry

I didn't realize this book was targeted towards younger readers until I read the first few pages, but it was still a well written, easy to read biography. It was interesting to read about Barack Obama because he is the president. It got me thinking about how hard people have to work to get where they are today. This book can get boring at times but the facts that I didn't know about him balances it out. It was informational and I would definitely recommend it to kids. Especially from ages 10-13.

    more from this reviewer

    yay

This book is, as it states in the title, a biography of Barack Obama. He has an interesting life, but this book was kind of... boring. It seems to be written for the ages of around eight to twelve. I suppose young admirers of President Obama will enjoy it.

    Informative

I read this book to my 9 and 12 year old. I enjoyed the book. My 9 year old had a hard time following it and he is a very good reader. There are times that there are lists of names and lists of other things that can confuse children. My 12 year old had an easier time following the book. I thought the book introduced a lot of interestings facts that the general public wouldn't know and would likely find to be interesting. I would recommend the book.
