Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
YM The Best of Say Anything, illus. by Daniel Krall, collects years of moments so embarrassing that you "could've dyed" (in the words of a girl with a bad hair-tint day). Culled from the columns of YM magazine, the myriad stories in this paperback volume relate the teenage horrors of exposed breasts, untimely releases of bodily gasses and fluids, and even stories submitted to the magazine by boys. VOYA
This book is an excruciating read! Think of your most humiliating teen moment-some version of it is probably included here. Paragraph-long entries compiled from YM magazine's Say Anything column detail the most embarrassing life moments sent in by readers of the magazine-real flashes from the lives of real girls that will make readers want to pull the covers over their heads and hide. Bodily functions, underwear malfunctions, klutzy pratfalls, boys, family, and school all figure in these silly, zany, and downright distressing stories about the human condition. There is even a short collection of "classic" moments compiled from the last forty years. Earlier events seem incredibly innocent when compared to some of the rougher contemporary moments. This casual read will provide younger teens with some good laughs and a few winces, and it could help a girl put an embarrassing moment of her own into perspective. Packaged in a slim unimposing book with a friendly layout, lots of white space, and some uninspired graphics to break up the text, this book would fit in with the graphic novels and humor books of a teen browsing collection. It could be a good recommendation for less-skilled readers. VOYA CODES: 3Q 2P M J (Readable without serious defects; For the YA with a special interest in the subject; Middle School, defined as grades 6 to 8; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9). 2004, Bantam, 112p.; Illus., Trade pb. Ages 11 to 15.

Gr 7 Up-Culling from experiences submitted by readers to the "Say Anything" column, the editors of ym (Your Magazine) have compiled the most horrifying, most "made my face red" moments from the magazine. The funny, sometimes gross, sometimes very gross tales are divided into eight chapters ranging from "School Daze" and "That Special, Special Time of the Month" to "Nightmares of the Century" and "Oldies" (classics dating back to the 1960s, when the magazine was named Calling All Girls, and the '70s and '80s, when it was called Young Miss). Bodily functions and bare butts do seem to make it into every section, though, as do some almost unbelievable reminiscences of public humiliation. Readers will laugh out loud, blush in empathy for, and shake their heads in disbelief at the wild and wacky stories related throughout the book. Cartoons and decorative graphics are included. A breezy read, perfect for comic relief during finals or anytime a stress-release moment is needed.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
