    I Also Recommend:

    See Inside Your Yoga Poses,

Yoga Anatomy is a book that gives the reader a look inside the human body as it is put in various yoga positions.

Chapter 1 covers the dynamics of breathing and actually covers some breathing physiology as well. Chapter 2 talks about the spine and gives some pretty detailed spinal information. Chapter 3 is short and covers the asanas.

The rest of the book, Chapters 4 through 9, make up the "meat" of the book and contains most of the anatomy information most readers probably bought the book for- what muscles are used in what poses. The way the book gives you the information is quite handy- it has a section on standing poses, sitting poses, kneeling poses, on-your-stomach poses, on-your-back poses, and arm supported poses. Sooo, all you have to do is pick a position/pose, and there you'll find pictures of what muscles are involved (and let me say, they show you some great angles of the poses to make sure the reader can see ALL the muscles that are involved). In addition to learing what muscles are involved, the book also tells you what joint actions are involved, as well as what body parts are working AND which ones are lengthening- neat!

A great reference book, its simply perfect for the yoga enthusiast that has become acquainted over time with muscles they never knew they had- but will now after reading this book! Also recommend The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution if plantar fasciitis pain keeps you from doing your yoga.

For Anyone Interested in Yoga, Breath, Posture, or Movement

The first chapter, ¿Dynamics of Breathing,¿ alone is worth to me many times the price of the book. In fact, I did pay many times the price of the book for this information in private sessions and courses with the author. This information was essential to me in developing a habit of highly pleasurable, joyful breathing. The chapter explains--in fundamental physical terms and clear, essentialized anatomical illustrations--what breathing is. One lesson that many students of breathing may find particularly illuminating is how the diaphragm drives chest breathing as well as belly breathing. This chapter is sure to be invaluable not only for yoga teachers and practitioners, but also for performers and mind-body-wellness practitioners who recognize the fundamentality of breathing. The second chapter, ¿Yoga and the Spine,¿ also transcends yoga in its value, and should be of interest to those concerned with posture, movement, and breath. The main body of the book consists of anatomical drawings and organized descriptions of more than 50 yoga poses, plus variations. The drawings are made from photographs, from various perspectives, of individuals in the poses. But the drawings also go under the skin to show muscles and other structures that are of particular interest when one is in a given pose. (The author notes, however, that: ¿Unlike weight training and stretching, which focus on specific muscles, yoga focuses on asanas that are whole-body practices [semicolon] no elements are entirely passive.¿) The descriptions accompanying the drawings identify principles to guide the beneficial and safe practice of each pose. I expect to refer to this book for as long as I practice yoga, which I hope is a very long time.

This is a frequently used reference

Yoga Anatomy shows inside the body and explains the breath needed in many popular poses as well as some that are quite difficult. The description of the breathing in each pose is useful for anyone working these asanas in practice. Obstacles and notes explain some of the challenges and key safety features of which to be mindful in different positions. Informative.

    Incredible Resource

â¿¿Yoga Anatomyâ¿ by Leslie Kaminoff is a precious gift to the postural Yoga community. Leslieâ¿¿s wealth of knowledge of anatomy, breathing and bodywork shines on every page. This book is easy to understand and beautifully illustrated and comes complete with Sanskrit and English terms and a chapter on breathing. â¿¿Yoga Anatomyâ¿ is an invaluable book and one I would highly recommend for teacher training programs.
