Hawk offers a way for people in recovery from addiction to work their Twelve-Step program in a way that will enhance their physical, mental, and spiritual health: through the practice of yoga. A yoga teacher, potter, and recovering addict, Hawk has walked the walk. Twelve-Steppers and counselors, the likeliest readers of the book, should know that Hawk concentrates on explaining yoga – its postures and other practices – and not the steps, though her grounding in the latter is clear. Her simple walk-through the parts of a true yoga practice, which includes rules for behavior, physical exercise, and breath and meditation practices, make a basic yoga practice highly attainable. She rightly cautions that a teacher is needed to learn the physical postures; the book's instructions can be hard to follow, and there aren't many, or good, photos to illustrate. A chapter on ayurvedic health concepts seems unnecessary. The book is best for those looking to enrich their recovery by developing more physical, and mental, flexibility. (Apr. 16)

Kyczy Hawk: Kyczy (Keet-ski) Hawk is a yoga teacher and potter living and working in San Jose, California, where her primary focus is teaching yoga classes designed for people recovering from addictions. Traveling to recovery homes, halfway houses, and detention centers, she has been involved with the Art of Yoga Project and the Niroga Institute; both organizations work with at risk youth. She is a certified Yoga of Recovery (YoR) Counselor.

She is in long term recovery. This is her first book.

I really enjoyed reading Yoga and the Twelve-Step Path. Even though I do yoga on my own I knew very little about it. Now I feel I can understand the poses so much better and can go back to this book whenever I have a question. I loved how clear it was in explaining the different kinds of yoga. It deals with recovery but I don't feel you have to be going through that to get the benefits. This book offers so much good information and was very easy to follow. I like how it was written with honesty and went into great detail for the reader to understand the benfits of yoga in everyday life. I can tell there was a ton of research that went into writing this book. It is very impressive and I would suggest it to all my friends.
