From the Publisher
Have you ever wanted to start doing yoga? Are you a teenager that can’t find a class that is serious enough to get through an exercise without laughing? Or, you can’t find a class for your own age group? Whether you want to do yoga for spiritual reasons, or to get healthy, or to be less stressed, Yoga Exercises for Teens is a great starter book. Though it’s written for teaching a class, anyone can use this book. It has helpful icons marking whether the exercise is for advanced students or if the exercise is supposed to be done in pairs. It also includes the eight yoga rules for life, the five precepts, and the five yoga abstinences...Yoga Exercises for Teens by Helen Purperhart is recommended for teachers starting to teach a yoga class and for teenagers wanting to try out yoga without really making a commitment. Yoga Exercises helps teens get in shape, stay fit and handle the pressures of daily life

Being a teenager and being stressed are often synonymous. During this period of life, change is the one constant. Dealing with high school, peer pressure and shifting family dynamics causes many to experience self-doubt, self-consciousness, concern and worry. While this is all a natural part of ¿growing up,¿ there are positive methods to help smooth the transition to adulthood. Exercise is a wonderful activity that can get the body moving in healthy ways, alleviate stress and improve self-image. Yoga, in particular, improves breathing, posture, strength, flexibility and promotes a sense of calm and relaxation. An excellent book filled with basic yoga skills is Yoga Exercises for Teens: Developing a Calmer Mind and a Stronger Body. The author, Helen Purperhart, an accomplished yoga instructor in the Netherlands, provides clear, easy-to-follow instructions for numerous yoga exercises, poses and routines. Accompanying illustrations clarify any possible misconceptions. Geared toward teens, parents and teachers, Purperhart includes excellent information on the principles of yoga, results of research conducted in the Netherlands on the benefits teens gained from practicing yoga as well as practical tips for teachers on how to run a class. However, as someone who has been practicing yoga for the past several years, there are a few things I would have liked to see included in this text. While Purperhart gives wonderful detailed instructions for each move, she doesn¿t provide any recommendations on how to modify the positions for those who find the exercises either too easy or too difficult to perform. Advice on how to tweak the poses would enhance the participant¿s experience and promote greater benefits. Also, even though yoga is a fantastic activity for improving strength, flexibility and a sense of relaxation, some of the moves can be dangerous for those with certain physical limitations and health issues. It would have been prudent for Purperhart to point this out and note caution with the poses considered controversial. Overall, I feel that Yoga Exercises for Teens is a great resource filled with numerous activities that teens can perform, master, enjoy and continue practicing throughout their lives.
