Read an Excerpt

Foreword

Yoga teaches us to relax physically, focus our minds, and keep our problems in perspective. It also helps to counteract the stresses and strains of the modern world, making it the perfect antidote to the rapidly changing pace of our busy lives.

Yoga helps you achieve harmony between your body and mind. The practice of poses (known as asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) cleanses your body, restores your energy, and makes you stronger and more flexible; it will also enable you to achieve emotional balance, leaving you better equipped to deal with the demands of your lifestyle.

Yoga for Beginners is a practical guide intended to introduce you safely and accessibly to the basic postures, breathing techniques, and other practices of yoga. You don't need any previous experience of yoga: the easy to-follow instructions make this guide suitable for the complete novice or anyone wishing to supplement their yoga practice at home. The book includes two series of exercises. Once you are thoroughly familiar with the postures and techniques of the beginner's program you can move onto the slightly more advanced intermediate program.

We have found that yoga has enhanced our lives remarkably, not only by changing our bodies, but also by opening the doors to an exciting journey of self-discovery. We hope that our book will enable you, too, to feel the benefits of stretching, moving, and breathing freely for yourself as you relieve built-up stress, learn to relax, and ultimately get more out of your day-to-day life. Enjoy!
