Foreword

Yoga teaches us to relax physically, focus our minds, and keep our problems in perspective. It also helps to counteract the stresses and strains of the modern world, making it the perfect antidote to the rapidly changing pace of our busy lives.

Yoga helps you achieve harmony between your body and mind. The practice of poses (known as asanas) and breathing exercises (pranayama) cleanses your body, restores your energy, and makes you stronger and more flexible; it will also enable you to achieve emotional balance, leaving you better equipped to deal with the demands of your lifestyle.

Yoga for Beginners is a practical guide intended to introduce you safely and accessibly to the basic postures, breathing techniques, and other practices of yoga. You don't need any previous experience of yoga: the easy to-follow instructions make this guide suitable for the complete novice or anyone wishing to supplement their yoga practice at home. The book includes two series of exercises. Once you are thoroughly familiar with the postures and techniques of the beginner's program you can move onto the slightly more advanced intermediate program.

We have found that yoga has enhanced our lives remarkably, not only by changing our bodies, but also by opening the doors to an exciting journey of self-discovery. We hope that our book will enable you, too, to feel the benefits of stretching, moving, and breathing freely for yourself as you relieve built-up stress, learn to relax, and ultimately get more out of your day-to-day life. Enjoy!

Absolutely wonderful for those just getting started

I am a full-time administrative assistant and full-time student; the time I have to devote to both exercise and relaxation are incredible marginal. I like the fact that I can de-stress my day and get my exercise in at the same time with Yoga. The easy-to-use book folds out so you can still view your movements while performing them, and the alternate ways you can stretch if you're not able to perform the movement like it demonstrates. Very easy to use and gives you the background info of Yoga, as well.

    Simple and specific

This is a no nonsense introduction to yoga that is easy to follow. It includes general, but significant concepts, basic postures in two well organized and ilustrated programs: beginners and intermediate levels. Presents modifications to postures for those less able. If followed as indicated, it will bring great benefits in a short period of time. Step by step instructions with outstanding photographs included.

    Great For Beginners

I was already about six months into a class in Hatha Yoga when I decided that Iyegar's Light On Yoga was a little too deep for me. I found this title at B&N and found it to be a useful source of information about the basic poses that I had been learning. For the true beginner, this book would be a good tool for learning those basics. The book is not written 'over anyone's head' and the photographs clearly illustrate the asanas. It is quite close to the Level 1 series as we study it in my own class, so I would recommend it for someone looking at going to a class or beginning a practice of their own.

Have been using this book for over 7 yrs, once a week. My balance improved significantly by the end of the first month. It's easy to follow and stretches those muscles after a day in front of the computer screen. It helped alleviate the aches and pains I used to have when I got out of bed in the morning.  If I miss a week, I start feeling those aches again first thing in the morning. It also gives you alternatives to the standard pose if your body isn't limber. I always feel great when I finish the exercises.

    Great Starting Place

I've been using this for a long time. It has a beginner's and intermediate section, and the pose instructions are very clear and easy to follow. I think this is a fantastic guide to starting yoga.

    Good Start

This book is a good start for people who've never ventured into yoga before. It briefly explains how to breathe properly. It also explains the movements involved in each posture. As this is a beginner's book, it includes only the most popular postures. Most will want to venture out after becoming comfortable with yoga.
