Overview

Mainstream America is finally catching on to what Eastern countries have known for thousands of years--that yoga is not only a great, low-impact way to increase flexibility and reduce stress, it is also useful in healing any number of afflictions, from common aches and pains to chronic diseases and emotional setbacks. In this easy to follow guide for practitioners at all levels, America's leading teacher of Viniyoga emphasizes the physical as well as the spiritual components of healing through yoga. Beginning with a general introduction, he then includes case studies and specific yoga sequences designed to address individual ailments. Best of all, each step of each posture in a sequence is clearly illustrated with its own photograph. The exercises in this book are truly transformative and certain to help those searching for alternatives to mainstream medicine and those looking for a way of becoming more involved in their own physical well-being.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Viniyoga provides a methodology for creating an individualized yoga program (the tradition adapts postures to individuals rather than vice versa), and Kraftsow has been recognized for his ability to train teachers and therapists in this method. Kraftsow's illustrated manual is meant to introduce "yoga for all levels" in a hands-on manner, but he seems unclear about his audience's background. Part 1, about yoga practice, assumes knowledge of anatomy and familiarity with the postures, while Part 2, about yoga therapy, explains physiology in detail too explicit for the reader of Part 1. Still, someone with previous experience in yoga or movement therapy can benefit from the chapters on adapting postures and creating sequences. Recommended for libraries with large health collections.--Elizabeth C. Stewart, Portland, ME Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Kraftsow is one of a few Westerners certified to train teachers and therapists in Viniyoga, an ancient tradition that adapts postures to individuals rather than forcing them into uncomfortable postures. He uses illustrated step-by-step instructions to focus on yoga as a means to attain physical and emotional health. Beginning with a general introduction that explains the principles behind yogic traditions, he uses case studies of people who have suffered from a broad spectrum of ailments to illustrate specific yoga sequences used to treat individual conditions. Each step of each exercise is illustrated with it's own b&w photo. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Powerful, applicable, effective healing through yoga A must for practitioners and teachers.

Powerful. This book has been my introduction to yoga and healing. I cannot describe how much it has helped me improve my chronic fatigue condition in just 4 weeks, it is unbelievable. I recomended it to my doctor (who urged me to start yoga practice) and strongly recommend it to any person interested in yoga, natural healing or both! All excercises are carefully explained and illustrated with photographs. Thank you Gary, your book is a great gift.

    Instructional Yoga for all

As a teacher, I am always looking for new materials to help expand my knowledge and thus my students. I have referred to this book so many times, it looks years old. Not only are there yoga postures in this book, Gary describes ways of using the postures with movement for the benefit of the body (internal and external). He also discusses release values and proper postures such as keeping the back strong and straight. I know that my students have benefited from Gary's knowledge, as I have. I recommend this book to all types of people.
