Overview

This is a fresh translation of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras. The author divided the book into 3 sections: Part 1 contains the verses with their translations. Part 2 is a simplified version in plain English, designed especially for Western readers who wanted a more readable and understandable translation. Part 3 is the complete work comprised of original Sanskrit verses, word-for-word meanings, transliterations, translations and in-depth commentary.
The Yoga Sutras of Sri Patajali is a premium text of psychological discipline. If there ever was a curriculum for yoga, Sri Patajali wrote it. Who is a student of yoga? Who is the yoga teacher? What is the step-by-step process of yoga? Is yoga arbitrary? Can yoga be adapted to the various types of psychologies? What are the components of human consciousness?
Michael Beloved, in his unbiased translation and commentary based on 40 years of meditation, sheds light on these question and more, delivering new insights into the advanced practices of meditation, kriya yoga and raja yoga. This work is a gift from a great yogin.

Meet the Author

I took my current body in 1951 in Guyana. In 1965, while living in Trinidad, I instinctively began doing yoga postures and trying to make sense of the supernatural side of life. Later on, in 1970, in the Philippines, I approached a Martial Arts Master named Mr. Arthur Beverford. I explained that I wanted a yoga instructor. Beverford identified himself as a disciple of the great yogin, Rishi Singh Gherwal. Beverford taught me the traditional Ashtanga Yoga with stress on postures, attentive breathing and brow chakra centering meditation. In 1972, I entered the Denver Colorado Ashram of Kundalini Yoga and took instruction in Bhastrika Pranayama and its application to yoga postures. Later in 1979, I formally entered the spiritual society founded by Bhaktivedanta Prabhupada.
I no longer participate in any formal spiritual groups or societies; however in recent years, I've devoted all my time to writing as much as possible on multiple interpretations of the Bhagavad Gita including a focus on kriya yoga, karma yoga, and brahma yoga. I've also translated the Uddhava Gita and provided a detailed commentary of the masterpiece. Most of my work is deeply philosophical and psychological in nature and is a reflection of a lifetime of dedication and austerity towards passing on the knowledge of those who instructed me.
My speciality is kundalini yoga and advanced meditation which was explained by Patanjali Mahayogin, as samyama which is the sequential development of linking ones attention to a higher reality, first with special effort, then spontaneously, and finally without effort and continuously.
