Meet the Author

Sri Swami Satchidananda was one of the first Yoga masters to bring the classical Yoga tradition to the West. He taught Yoga postures, meditation, and a vegetarian and more compassionate lifestyle to Westerners when he was invited to America in 1966 by the iconic pop artist Peter Max. The distinctive teachings he brought with him blend the physical discipline of Yoga, the spiritual philosophy of Vedic literature, and the interfaith ideals he pioneered. I am a high school sophomore and I chose to read this book for my project. I found this book to be somewhat interesting. It goes in depth to teach what Yoga is, and what it does to help you. I did not like it when it had a lot of words in Sutras. I thought that it was not important  to have in the book. I thought the book would have examples of Yoga positions but it did not. As an active person, if I have done Yoga, I would fail because I cannot sit and just meditate for a long time, I would get bored. What I related to the most were the five kinds of  mental modifications. To actually have the right feeling of Yoga, you would have to do it on a daily basis. After I read that, I was  thinking that even if I tried to do Yoga it would not fit me. I thought that Yoga you would just get it immediately, but it is just like everything  else, if you want to do something it takes time and practice. This book has taught me that your mind is one of the key factors. Overall  after reading The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali I did not like it, even though it taught me a lot about something that I didn’t know before. I  thought that Yoga was very easy, but then I would have to work on a lot of my low factors to actually get the real meaning of Yoga.  As I read through the book, it taught me many things that I did not know about Yoga.
