Mazie, the oldest daughter in the growing family of Jim and Anna Holbrook, tells the story of the family's desire for a better life – Anna's dream that her children be educated and Jim's wish for a life lived out in the open, away from the darkness and danger of the mines. At every turn in their journey, however, their dreams are frustrated, and the family is jeopardized by cruel and indifferent systems.

    this was an o.k. book

This is a pretty good book altogether. It was sort of hard for me to get into it but after the first chapter or so I started to get more into it. It is about a life struggle that Mazie and Anna and the rest of their family have to go through. They are two very strong people that take lifes challenges as they come at them. I like the way that the author told the story line and I like the way that they described the story. I think that this is more of a story for girls because of the way it is told but If you are a guy and you like reading about struggles then I would suggest this book to you.
