Yorkshire Terrier: Tiny but Tough

Yorkshire Terrier: Tiny but Tough

by Margaret Fetty

In 1945, during World War II, U.S. troops captured a Philippine island. They needed to run a wire underground to set up a telephone system. Yet digging a trench would take too long. Luckily, they had a soldier who could help do the job-Smoky, a four-pound Yorkshire terrier. Would Smoky be able to squeeze through a narrow pipe and pull the wire through?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Yorkshire Terrier: Tiny but Tough is part of the "Little Dogs Rock!" series of books by Bearport Publishing geared to the 7- to 12-year-old child interested in learning more about small dog breeds. The book is filled with a variety of interesting chapters including "Working for the Army," which describes the true story of "Smoky," a Yorkshire Terrier who helped soldiers in World War II connect a telephone system by use of an underground cable traversed by the dog. "Bred to Hunt" describes the Yorkshire Terrier's early history; "A New Breed," "Special Care," and "The Yorkie Look" describe the great degree of popularity this breed enjoys. These chapters also open the discussion of this breed's maintenance and care requirements. This book may be a good starting point for the child considering adding a Yorkshire Terrier to the family. "It's Show Time" describes some top-winning Yorkie show dogs including the first Yorkie to ever win Best in Show at the Westminster Dog Show, Cede Higgins. The final pages featuring "Yorkshire Terriers at a Glance" and "Best in Show" give basic details on life expectancy, weight, personality, and even the things a judge would look for in the dog show ring. The 21-word glossary" includes many words that are not directly related to the Yorkshire Terrier. The bibliography, "Read More" section, and "Learn More Online" pages offer opportunities for further study and research and may require assistance.
