Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Reading Mr. Graf’s wonderful and often breathtaking vacation adventures of the Parker family made me want to grab my backpack and head for the high country.”

—Marsha Holland, literacy coordinator

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Twins James and Morgan Parker and their parents are on the trip of a lifetime, backpacking and climbing in Yosemite National Park. While the kids are climbing the face of Ranger Rock with their climbing guide they meet another climber who has been injured in a previous accident and can no longer use his legs, so he is using special equipment to help him climb the rock. The kids and their parents will be climbing Half-Dome later in the week and find out that the handicapped climber will be there too. The book follows the Parker family and in alternating chapters, the handicapped climber and the guide. The author weaves in a great deal of factual information along with the story including information about the popular hikes in Yosemite, the waterfalls, and the bears. When the family encounters Mark, the disabled climber, and Mike, the climbing guide, again, Mike has suffered an injury from a falling rock and Mark is working with him to make sure that he is able to finish the climb up Half-Dome. The writing style is entertaining and the facts are interesting and well presented. The book is filled with breathtaking photos of the park as well as ink and watercolor sketches. Part of a series on the national parks, this book will be popular with middle school children and their teachers. Recommended. Reviewer: Ellen Welty
