Set in Japan with japanese sensibilities about the bonds between family and friends -- it follows the reactions of people to a bizarre little girl that a man adopted during an overseas stay who has returned to Japan. There's no big overarching plot -- its a leisurely examination of daily life as perturbed by Yotsuba. The characters are each very individual and hard to stereotype. The english translation is pretty good - the translator has gotten the spirit of the dialog. Those learning Japanese definitely want to purchase the original japanese versions though as there's a fair amount of subtle humor and character exposition that gets "lost in translation". I recommend the entire series (which is still in progress in Japan as well).

Yotsuba& is an outstanding, light-hearted, slice of life manga anyone can enjoy. Humorous and addicting, you can't call yourself a manga fan if you don't have this series. ADV did a good job with the translation.

I love these books so much. They're so funny! But, this is the wrong synopsis. It's the synopsis for the fifth book (just so you know). I can't wait till this one comes out!
