Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Close-up photos of multicultural parents and children engaged in everyday activities are the main draw in You and Me, Baby by Lynn Reiser, illus. by Penny Gentieu. "Ooooh, baby!/ Look at you,/ splashing me,/ splashing you," reads the text for a series of bathtime scenes. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature - Quinby Frank
This board book offers glorious close-up photographs of happy, healthy looking babies gurgling and laughing with their caregivers. Daddies, grandmothers, and mommies are all represented, as are Caucasian, African American, and Asian infants. Warm, brightly colored backgrounds coordinate nicely with baby and caregiver attire. The babies respond enthusiastically to the adults who interact with them through a variety of fun baby communication games. They hug, they splash in the bathtub, they feed each other, they play peek-a-boo, and more. The fostering of loving bonds between babies and adults is perfectly and idyllically captured by these vibrant photos. There is not a screaming, red-faced infant or dirty diaper in sight. The audience for this book is somewhat puzzling, but the joyful aspects of baby-rearing are very much in evidence here, and young children will enjoy looking at the pictures of these adorable babies. The photo of the baby on the cover is particularly enchanting, and the endpapers include many more irresistible baby faces. A wonderful portrait of the joys of babyhood. Reviewer: Quinby Frank

PreS-Gr 1-The beautiful photographs of adorable babies from diverse backgrounds and their parents are what stand out in this simple picture book. Each photo features a simple interaction between parent and child, such as playing peek-a-boo or hugging. The crisp, color close-ups clearly show the children's expressions and actions. The illustrations are enhanced by bold background colors that are seamlessly coordinated with the clothing. The sparse text can be a little confusing, and it's tricky to get the right flow when reading aloud. "Mmmm, baby, hug me, hugging you, hugging me, hugging you!" or "Wow, baby! Look at you, waving at me, waving at you, waving at me." This minor weakness can be overlooked as the pictures are so engaging that children will insist on looking at them time and again.-Catherine Callegari, Gay-Kimball Library, Troy, NH Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
The simple interactions between baby and mommy or daddy are the focus of Gentieu's marvelous photos and Reiser's repetitive text. The duo explores the bond that forms between baby and caregiver as they imitate each other, the simplest form of communication. "Wow baby! Look at you, waving at me, waving at you, waving at me." Gentieu's photographs make this a selection perfect for any new parent or library that caters to them. Her appealing, up-close photos perfectly capture the emotions of the parents and babies as they engage each other in looking, waving, smiling, feeding, hugging, splashing, laughing and playing peek-a-boo. Adding to their universal appeal, the photos represent several different races and feature both mommies and daddies. As most know, babies love looking at babies, so the question is, "Where's the board book?" (Picture book. 0-3)
