Overview

Every child is brave in his or her own way, and there are many different ways to be brave. With simple words and vivid illustrations that relate to children's everyday lives, You Are Brave lets very young children know that bravery is about all kinds of things: walking and running, meeting new people, climbing and jumping, trying new foods, and more. The "superhero" cover reinforces the message. A warm, affirming, important little book that helps children know they are precious and valuable.

Children's Literature
As a first-time reader I was a bit confused with this little title from the “You Are Important” series. It is a board book with the typical repetition of phrases “you are brave when …” which makes me think of young, preschool kids (and in fact the publisher lists it for ages “baby through preschool”). However, the children in the illustrations look older. They are taking part in what I would consider risky activity for a baby or preschooler (climbing high, jumping into the pool with no adult in sight, picking up insects, and approaching a dog, again with no adult in sight). Take the girl in the yellow shirt with the dog on (unmarked) pages twelve and thirteen. She has a full set of grownup looking teeth! However, if this book were introduced to elementary school children, I think the board book format would have little appeal. One positive comment about the content: unlike many “character” books I see today, this one is on target in talking about what it means to be brave. Not once did the author move into the gray area of calling someone a hero just because they can go to bed with the light off. I applaud that. Overall, it is hard to recommend this book because of these discrepancies, and just as difficult to set an accurate age range. Reviewer: Cathy Puett Miller

I am pleased to see children from all ethnic and culturally diverse backgrounds illustrated in this series of books. I bought these books last year and am planning on buying more as they make great gifts for children. The parents of the children I gave the books to loved them also. The children can relate because they look like themselves and their friends.

When I read these books, I was so blessed. I wanted to read them right away to the second graders that I taught a few years ago. I now teach Middle School and I thought that they would not be interested. Boy, was I wrong when I have students reading they pick these books first. As an artist I so appreciate an artist that is not afraid of exploring people of color and not allowing one race to become exclusive over this series of books. Well writen, well ilustarted, well published.
