Children's Literature - Carlee Hallman
Through examples provided in this book, children will learn some ways to be helpful. The slick soft cover shows a smiling girl carrying a bag of healthful groceries. Simple words convey various activities such as dressing yourself, putting away your toys, holding hands when crossing the street, raking leaves with your family, putting trash in the right bin, and feeding the cat. An illustration shows a girl in a doctor's office opening her mouth for a tongue depressor as her father watches. Children at school listen to the teacher and follow directions. Staying with your mother at the grocery store is another helpful action featured in the story. The pictures show children of various ethnic backgrounds. The one sentence of text per two page spread is in capital letters. Children will begin to associate the words with the pictures. These examples may put obedience in the positive light of helpfulness, but putting away your own toys and holding hands as you cross the street seems to force the issue. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
