Overview

Percolating with suave continental cool, YOU ARE HERE offers a tasty mix of ambient electronics and chic international flavors. The French brother-sister team of Didier and Danielle Jean took the name Uman from the native American word umane, which means "earth force." Though they're not inspired by Native American music, a global spirit shines through the sophisticated layers of Didier's sampled sounds and Danielle's stylish vocals. Jazz lovers will groove to the guest artists' many fine solos on trumpet, sax, clarinet, flute, and percussion. On "The Way to Peace," Danielle's harmonious scat singing is oh-so-cool, while on the African lullaby "N'doly or the Mother Land," her velvety, playful sound blends with the tribal voice of Moussa Dialo. Though YOU ARE HERE uses instruments and rhythms from many cultures and evokes images of vacation maps, the music suggests a universal "be here now" ambience. The songs have no specific lyrics, but descriptive poetry accompanies each track, and artwork by Zad makes YOU ARE HERE a completely hip artistic experience that will put a smile on your face.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
French siblings Danielle and Didier Jean return as Uman with 1999's You Are Here. Though the album's pieces still feature Danielle's haunting vocals and Didier's lush, ambient textures, You Are Here finds Uman exploring the percussive side of their music. Elements of ambient, electronic, new age and world music combine in a seductive, sophisticated blend that is unique, atmospheric and distinctively Uman.
