Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Even Ichikawa's (the Tanya series) effervescent watercolors can't disguise a rhyming text that is as corny as Kansas in August. The simile-driven format is established on the very first page: "I am your parent; you are my child. I am your quiet place; you are my wild." As the sage teddy bear and the adorable child make their way through the day, the elder bear is always described in terms of wisdom and patience, while the offspring is ebullient and unpredictable (the characters' genders aren't specified). First-time author Cusimano stretches the conceit past the breaking point: for bathtime, she writes, "I am your dry towel; you are my wet bath." At the evening meal, it's "I am your dinner; you are my chocolate cake. I am your bedtime; you are my wide awake." Fortunately, Ichikawa's graceful, full-bleed pictures have none of the text's saccharine qualities. Her views of the teddy bear duo have a sweet, simple pellucidity, instantly communicating all that the reader needs to know about the wonders of loving and being loved. Ages 3-7. (Apr.) Children's Literature
Parents and children often struggle with one another and this precious book is a subtle reminder that we are meant to balance each other daily. With lines like "I am your way home; you are my new path. I am your dry towel; you are my wet bath" readers are encouraged to see things from another's point of view. The rhyming text is soothing and thought-provoking. Ms. Ichikawa's soft, fluid watercolors add life to the text and make this book all the more endearing. This is a wonderful book to share with children and it would be a wonderful gift book, sure to be treasured by all. Highly recommended. 2001, Philomel, $15.99. Ages 6 mo. up. Reviewer: Trina Heidt

PreS-The rhythmic and lyrical text of this beautifully illustrated picture book explores the special connections between a parent and child. The opening pages show an adult teddy bear curled up with a baby bear: "I am your parent;/you are my child./I am your quiet place;/you are my wild." The verses that follow describe the activities of a busy day. While they play outside, the grown-up explains, "I am your water wings;/you are my deep./I am your open arms;/you are my running leap." After a bath, dinner, and a favorite story, the poem ends with a quiet moment: "I am your lullaby;/you are my peekaboo./I am your good-night kiss;/you are my/I love you." The soft watercolor illustrations bring the spirit behind the text to light. The joy and movement of running, spinning, splashing, and hugging are all captured in a warm and lighthearted manner, and the baby bear's small toy animals often join in the fun and games. An appealing choice for bedtime sharing.-Genevieve Ceraldi, New York Public Library Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Newcomer Cusimano's tale is a celebration of the transcendent, loving bonds that exist between a parent and child. In melodic couplets, a father croons a tender lullaby to his child, describing their mutual adoration. Alternately sentimental and comical, the verses focus on the minutiae of a child's daily life: silly games, carrot stick snacks and chocolate desserts, and bedtime stories. The lyrical verses capture the yin and yang of the parent/child relationship; the parent's role provides the security a child craves while the child's part illuminates the joyous freedom that comes from that sense of sanctuary. Cusimano subtly conveys a powerful message about the intimate connection between these two roles; for every way in which the beloved child is the epicenter of the parent's universe, the parent in turn is the steadfast mooring of the child's world. "I am your water wings; / you are my deep. / I am your open arms; / you are my running leap." While the introspective verses are more reflective of an adult's sensibilities, the depth of the emotion expressed will resonate with young readers. Ichikawa's soft pastel watercolors complement the heart-felt verses. Her beguiling artwork features an animated pair of stuffed teddy bears frolicking about, with the little bear's antics perfectly portraying the exuberance and reckless joie de vivre that is part and parcel of a happy, well-loved tot's existence. Warmly reassuring, this tale is ideal for sharing with loved ones, big or small. (Picture book. 3-7)

This is a longtime favorite of ours

We love this story! More importantly, our 3- (nearly 4-) year-old wants to hear this story over and over again. And, as our son's "story-readers," we don't get bored with it, either. It's a great book to give as a gift, and although there is a line in the book ". . . You are my King," we tactfully inserted "(or Queen!)" for a friend who recently had a little girl. Our little guy has the book memorized-- rhyming and cadence facilitates this. Finally, the illustrations are truly beautiful and warm. Kudos to author AND artist! You can't go wrong with this lovely book! This is a wonderful read for big and little alike.

    Such a wonderful book

True story, this book really represents everything our children are to us and we are to them at this age (2-5).
At the moment, the children are young and don't fully understand what the book is talking about, but it really hits home to us parents. I strongly recommend this book and bought copies for my brother, sister and sister in law's children. They may not get it now being so young, but one day it will click and I know they will all smile.

    Endearing!!!Beautiful!!!!Heartwarming!!!

I found this book at a discount store tossed on a shelf. I began to read it in the middle of the aisle and quickly my heart swelled and tears welled in my eyes because it said everything I felt as a parent. I quickly took the book to my husband and made him read it too. He too got that "masculine emotional" look and said, "We are getting this book!" It is the perfect description of our daily life with our daughter. The give and take relationship between a parent and child and the expounding love you have for your child as a parent. It would be a beautiful gift for expecting or new parents. Just don't let the expecting mother read it right there at the shower...she will definately cry! I wish the publisher would make this book for infants in the hard cardboard pages. My daughter squeals and slaps at the pictures and wants to touch the pages with her moist baby hands. I love that she is excited to hear the book but I don't want to ruin it either. I will buy another if she does destroy it...it is that wonderful of a book!

    A beautiful story...

I love the rhythm of reading this one outloud. It's a delightful book to share with a child you love. I also really love the 2nd book, "You Are My Miracle" with it's Christmas theme.

    Beautiful heart-warming book

We bought this book for our daugher while on vacation. When I got back the the house and read the book tears streamed down my face. It can be a little corny, but the writer does such a great job of attempting to put the love you have for your child into words. Great, great book!

This is an heriloom book!!! I love it!!!

I purchased this book when my son Aedan was 3 months old....tears poured down my cheeks while purchasing it. It truly put all my feelings in writing. My pregnancy was tough and I didn't know if he would make it. He is here, healthy and this book sure puts life in perspective. I value him so much and by being able to read him this wonderful book just lets him know how much I care. I even wrote my own dedication in the front so he will have it forever. I recommend this book to EVERY person who loves children.

    first time mother to be

I am recommending this book to EVERYONE. mothers, fathers, grandparents aunts uncles cousins mentors! I used to work in a barnes and noble bookstore 2 years ago in the childrens department, I read this book one time to myself and I cried on my shift. It then became my favorite book in the whole world! I put it on the employee recomendations list and read it to children during story time, and insisted that parents buy it for their children no matter how old they are. I myself am now expecting my first baby in December and this is the very first book that I plan on buying to start my baby's library. In fact I think I'll buy a few extra copies to give to friends who are also expecting... even if you dont have a special child in your life... read this book it will touch your heart.

    My daughter's favorite book

I purchased this book about 2 years ago and fell in love with it in the book store. I could not wait to get home and read it to my beautiful 2 year old daughter. That night as I read it to her I had tears in my eyes when I finished. My daughter asked why and I told her this book helped me to let her know how much I loved her. She told me that this would be her favorite book always and to this day not a week goes by that she does not ask me to read this to her.

I found myself in tears at the bookstore!

I was looking for that special book to give to my husband on his second Father's Day when I found this truly touching book. He read the book aloud and by the end both of us were teary eyed. We are going to give this book to our child in hopes that she will keep this book and read it to her children. I recommend it to anyone!!

This Book Is Worth The Tears......

A few months back my son was badly burn on his feet. It was a very emotional time for me especially my husband. My husband kept blaming himself for the accident which wasn't the case. The hospital where we were at had a book sale and I came across this book. The title captured my eye and fell in love with it immediately. I thought it was the perfect gift for my husband to read to our son. Each time he reads this book to our son, my husband's eyes fill with tears. He felt this book was exactly the kind of relationship he had with our son. Now we take it ever where we go so my husband doesn't miss a night of reading it to our son. He even takes it when he has to be away. I think this is just an awesome book to buy. I really recommend to others to get a copy.
