School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7-12--Careers in Baseball follows the same format as Blumenthal's outstanding Careers in Television (Little, 1992). Engaging, informative sketches of successful people in positions such as broadcaster, photographer, scout, stadium entertainer, and pitcher are the medium used to convey the variety of options. Each vignette is filled with expert advice on how to prepare for and enter that field. Hands-on experience, whether through volunteerism, internship, or minimum-wage work, is given equal weight to college or other specialized training. Black-and-white photos add interest to the stories. Definitions of pertinent terms, highlighted in a ``lingo'' column at the edge of each section, are helpful but the device is not as effective as a straight glossary. Those wanting to know more can find addresses of baseball enterprises and a list of books and periodicals at the end. An excellent guide, outstanding for its upbeat style, useful tips, and unique selection of choices for working in America's favorite pastime. --Diane P. Tuccillo, Mesa Public Library, AZ
