    Unfortunately Disappointing

While books published by DK are usually top-notch, I was disappointed by 'You Can Draw Marvel Characters.' Its predecessor, 'Draw the Marvel Comics Superheroes,' published by Klutz, was a similar book - spiral-bound, with translucent 'tracing paper'-style overlays - trying to give students new to drawing a hand in learning how to craft their favorite comic book characters, but was also a more successful effort: the Klutz version's tutorials were more detailed and easier to follow, and answered more questions. They also provided a great deal of encouragement and some important insight for the beginner. This book is less successful - the tutorials lack the necessary cohesive 'step-by-step' effect and cut corners, and I found myself disappointed that the sort of warm-hearted approach exuded in the Klutz effort was not apparent here. I advise anyone looking for a good starting drawing book to check out Klutz's book.

Good Starting Point For Young Artists...

For a mere 96 pages, this book is a well designed primer for young aspiring comic book artists just starting out. Jurgens touches briefly on an assortment of topics: basic figure drawing, anatomy, perspective, action poses, shading, crosshatch, creating villains, building a comicbook page, coloring and some tools of the trade. Drawing is encouraged throughout this book with trace paper examples for children to imitate. The book also includes foldout pages that give a step-by-step of how things should look... the Marvel way of course. There is nothing overly technical, longwinded or otherwise hard to understand in this book. While it's far from being the only book a young artist will need to become proficient, it should serve to whet the creative appetite within.
