I love the layout of this book. It starts with the very basics, such as naming notes/keys and positioning each hand on the keyboard, and builds from there. The instruction takes the learner through each step needed to play the piano. With this book and practice, anyone can learn to play. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn and is starting from scratch.

The CD adds a tremendous dimension to the learning experience. This really works! My kids didn't lose interest with this book. It's a hit in our house!

Just a quick note to tell you how much I love this book. I received this as a Christmas present and have been playing along with the CD every chance I get. This book is easy to understand and I practice every chance I get. This book is more fun than the one I tried 40 years ago. Thank you!

As a music educator, I am always looking for interesting ways of teaching piano. I found that the 'You Can Play Piano' by Amy Appleby appeals to students of all ages. Both the children and adults love the jazzy accompaniments which accompany each melody on the CD. If you turn one speaker down, you can get just the piano part, while both speakers give you the sound of a full orchestra. Amy's voice on the CD sounds very friendly and encouraging. You can pause the CD at any time to review concepts you don't understand. I tried this method book out with several of my students. I found that a younger beginner, aged 8, enjoyed it while I worked with her. We went slowly and it took her a bit longer than the older student, aged 12, to finish. One of my students, aged 16, had no problem working with the book alone. She had some basic knowledge from playing a violin and always wanted to learn to play the piano. I supplemented her lessons with another method book, but she always wanted to work from the 'You Can Play Piano book.' She'd work on the CD by herself at home and then we'd go over it. I am amazed at the progress she made with this book. An adult friend of mine, with no prior music lessons, was able to work independently. She enjoyed the ragtime piece, 'The Entertainer.' The book teaches students how to transpose melodies into different keys. It teaches all the basics of melodic and rhythmic notation, sightreading, phrasing, dynamics and chords through its many popular songs. This book contains a wealth of information and is very reasonably priced.

I first thought this book was ideal for a person who has no prior music playing or reading experience. I was getting step-by-step help from the CD. But, when I was asked to play 'Ode To Joy', which asked me include my left hand, there was no help. Therefore, I find this book dissappointing. If you can use your left hand for harmony then this book maybe ok. The book lack true beginners help.
