Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrice Russo Belotte
When young minds begin to learn about art, they often begin by drawing or making music. They may use clay and mold it to make a flower, or a keyboard to play a short tune. However, words can be used to make art, too. Instead of mold or a keyboard, a poet uses words. Since poems can be abstract and often break the rules of writing and grammar, learning to write poetry is a challenge. After a few chapters, it is easy to imagine a character from a story in your mind, but it can be challenging to picture an image from a poem in only a few short lines. Part of the "You Can Write" series, this title shows young readers how to read and write poetry. This title defines and explains different types of poetry and poetic devices. Free Verse poems allow the writer to make lots of choices about their poem. While other forms, like haiku, challenge the writer to be expressive by limiting their choices. Word choice, details, and imagery are essential to writing poetry. All definitions are written simply and include examples supported by bold pictures to help young readers understand the art of poetry. Aspiring poets will learn how to use strong verbs, similes, and alliteration to craft unique poems. Each type of poetry and writing device includes an easy-to-follow prompt that asks readers to test out their skills. This title includes a glossary and additional resources.
