Overview

This fantastical tale is about a little boy who simply wants toast and juice for breakfast—but instead is snatched up by a tornado and dropped off at a castle, where the king forces him to eat a big banana split. And back home instead of getting to take a simple shower like he wants, he is swooshed away to a pirate ship and forced to walk the gangplank (after that, he doesn’t need the shower). From there, things become even more unreasonable as the refrigerator skyrockets into the air and a goof-looking space creature demands one trillion hamburgers. All in a day’s work for an imaginative young boy.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-One not-so-average Monday morning, a boy's wishes go awry. He hopes for toast and juice; instead he is picked up by a tornado, flown to a castle, and ordered by the resident to eat a banana split. Home again, he hopes for a warm shower; instead, a wave sweeps him away to the ocean and onto a pirate ship, where he is forced to walk the plank. And so it goes, culminating in a floating school and a purple monster who demands that he make one trillion hamburgers at Burgers R Us-to go-before returning home to his mother, where the final illustrations hints at another adventure to come. This story is suitably illustrated with intensely colorful pencil drawings. The cartoonlike and exaggerated illustrations are a perfect match for the wild goings-on. The pictures have many absurd details that extend the humor in the narrative. Most children will appreciate this funny fantasy.-Anne Parker, Milton Public Library, MA

You don't always get everything you hope for. I know.

Yesterday, I woke up HOPING to have toast and juice for breakfast. I like toast and juice.

But instead, a tornado picked me up out of my bedroom and flew me to a castle on a tall mountain.
