Overview

A delightful new romantic comedy from an author who "never disappoints."* (New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson)

She was the perfect party-planning, haute-to-the max trophy wife. Now Maxine Cambridge is broke, unemployable and living with her mother and teenage son in a retirement village, with her self-esteem kicked to the curb.

Until her geeky former classmate Campbell Barker returns, all grown-up- and off-the-scale smokin' hot. Campbell refuses to believe Max isn't that smart, funny girl he's crushed on since high school. The more Max tries to show him he's wrong, the more she rediscovers her long-retired mojo. Now, she's ready to throw down some payback on her ex-life and fight for what she deserves...

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Launching the Ex Trophy Wives series, Cassidy aims for slapstick comedy but misses the mark. After Maxine Cambridge's husband trades her in for a younger model, Maxine is reduced to working at a fast-food restaurant. Even worse, she and her son are stuck living with her mother in a senior citizens' retirement village. Enter Campbell Barker, a former high school classmate of Maxine's who's morphed from geeky to sexy. Campbell remembers the sassy prom queen that Maxine used to be and urges her to stand up to her soon-to-be ex-husband. Even though Maxine has sworn off men, she finds herself attracted to Campbell. Straddling the line between romance and women's fiction, Maxine's journey to empowerment is meant to get readers cheering, but her irritating antics and constant overreactions make it hard, as do the abundant clichés. Enjoyable read

I recently saw a notice for a blog ARC tour featuring a book by Dakota Cassidy. My little blog doesn¿t have enough followers for me to be able to participate so I passed on entering. However, it made me think about the first book in the series You Dropped a Blonde on Me. I remembered reading it and donating the book to my library after I was finished. I decided to re-read the book and order the second book in the series so I could read that as well.
You Dropped a Blonde on Me is the story of Maxine Cambridge, the onetime trophy wife of Finley Cambridge, a major car dealer. Maxine was once the face of the dealership commercials but found herself out when she began to show too much mileage. The final crack in the marriage was discovering that her husband was cheating on her again with his secretary who is also the sister of Maxine¿s best friend. Now, Maxine is living with her mother and desperate for a job to support herself and her son. She runs into Campbell Barker, formerly geeky classmate, on her way out of Cluck-Cluck after she has humiliated herself in her job quest.
If this sounds familiar, it is because it is a tried and true romance novel plotline, but this book is still very enjoyable to read, even for a second time. Maxine is not the typical spunky soon to be ex wife, full of fight and ready to take on the world. She has been beaten down by years of putting her needs behind her husband¿s and trying to be perfect to keep him happy. Maxine has so little self worth that she is afraid to fight for what is rightfully hers and her son¿s because she cannot stand up to her bullying ex. Campbell remembers her as a strong, confident girl and can¿t understand how she has changed so much. Campbell has ex issues of his own but he has been able to put his bad experience behind him. Their romance is full of misunderstandings and hurt feelings but they find that something inside to keep it alive.
There is a secondary plot involving Lenore, Max¿s best friend and a mysterious man named Adam. Lenore went through her own version of losing her trophy wife status and she is just a fearful as Max about relationships.
It is a testament to Ms. Cassidy¿s writing skills that a story that has been told before was still interesting. The characters were well drawn and you cared about their lives. I am excited to start the second book, which I will also donate to my library.

    LOL funny

Every Dakota book needs a warning label... don't read if you need to pee... cuz you're gonna. LOL funny with enough spice to make it a romance.

Dakota Cassidy hit a home run with this new series

You Dropped a Blond on Me
    By: Dakota Cassidy
    Publisher: Berkeley Sensation December 2010

You Dropped A Blond on Me is Dakota Cassidy's entry book into the world of ex-trophy wives. We meet Maxine, who spent 20 years busting a gut trying to be the woman and wife her older husband wanted. She sublimated herself into his wishes and demands.

Ms. Cassidy treats us to pain, hurt, embarrassment and laughter. Sometimes even within the same chapter as her character strains to build a life for herself and her son Connor. I believe that Ms Cassidy has reached new heights in her writing and I am looking forward to the trips she plans to take us on as this series unfolds.

Dakota, you've really sucked it up big time Princess and I think you have a winner.

    Not Worth the Money...

I liked the smart witty banter between charaters, but it really got to be old by the halfway point of the book. It was a very slow read...you kept wanting to push the charaters along and say "get to the point already!". The ending was a real disappointment as heroine should have been very empowered by then but just kind flopped.

fans will enjoy the saga of New Jersey's biggest loser

Maxine Cambridge cannot believe how far her economic situation has collapsed. She was a trophy wife and mom until she caught her spouse Finley "The Talleywhacker" cheating on her. His reaction was to begin divorce proceedings and cut off all of Maxine's funding. Desperate Maxine and her teenage son Connor, who chose his mom over his dad and Lacey, move in with her mom Mona Henderson in her retirement village.

Maxine cannot find employment as she has no marketable skills even at the Cluck Cluck Palace fast food place, which eight months ago she, make that Finley, could have owned it. Instead of designer gowns, she wears her mom's bargains. Humiliated enough, she feels it is time to bury her when she meets her high school class of '87 chemistry partner Campbell Barker. He has always liked smart, sassy Max and still does as he appreciates her self-deprecating sense of humor. Now he has to make her believe he is serious when it comes to her.

Using humor to lighten the tense family drama, You Dropped a Blonde on Me looks at the aftermath of a horrid divorce mostly from the perspective of mad Max. Although the finish is as expected, mindful of the First Wives Club, fans will enjoy the saga of New Jersey's biggest loser; as she sucks it up seeking her groove while failing numerous times, but always gets up to try again, as Mona says she is a not a quitter.
