What happens when the one that got away comes back? Find out in this sparkling debut from Mhairi McFarlane.

‘Think of the great duos of history. We're just like them.’
‘You mean like Kylie and Jason? Torvill and Dean? Sonny and Cher?’
‘I think you’ve missed the point, Rachel.’

Rachel and Ben. Ben and Rachel. It was them against the world. Until it all fell apart. It’s been a decade since they last spoke, but when Rachel bumps into Ben one rainy day, the years melt away.

They’d been partners in crime and the best of friends. But life has moved on: Ben is married. Rachel is not. Yet in that split second, Rachel feels the old friendship return. And along with it, the broken heart she’s never been able to mend.

Hilarious, heartbreaking and everything in between, you’ll be hooked from their first ‘hello’.

Meet the Author

Mhairi was born in Scotland in 1976 and has been explaining how to pronounce her name ever since. (With a ‘V’, not an ‘M’. Yes, that’s us crazy Celts for you).

She is based in Nottingham where she used to be a local journalist and now she’s a freelance writer and sometime-blogger, which we all know is code for messing about on Twitter.

She likes drinking wine, eating food and obtaining clothes; all the impressive hobbies. Her best anecdotes involve dislocating her elbow tripping over a briefcase and a very bad flight to New York. She lives with a man and a cat.

I found Rachel's character was under-developed. I found it hard

I found Rachel's character was under-developed. I found it hard to picture her character her and so therefore did not really 'care' fro her too much. Ben was also slightly annoying in that he was too backwards in coming forwards..not a true grasp o today's university students! The idea for the story was a good one as we all look back and have fond memories of those days but I wasn't bowled over...sorry!

    Super cute read

A little long, but satisfying read. Love that everything was fairly realistic and believeable even with the happily ever after ending.

"Sparkling debut" is the perfect description for this

"Sparkling debut" is the perfect description for this wonderfully-told tale of two former best friends who, after finally getting together in college, had a massive miscommunication that resulted in ten years of estrangement.

Rachel bumps into her former flame, Ben, and she's immediately catapulted into a web of sticky feelings: He's married - happily so, from all appearances - and she's recently unengaged from her very longtime fiance. She tries so hard to do the right thing in ignoring her feelings, and moving on with her life...but from the moment these two meet on the page, it's clear that they're meant to be together.

This novel is filled with quick, snappy dialogue (it's British English, so Americans take note of the British-isms; they may be hard-to-follow if you're unfamiliar with English culture or contemporary British women's fiction). When Rachel's with her friends, the words fly out of their mouths in such a way that I felt as if I was sitting in the room with them. When Rachel's with Ben (especially in the beginning), I could feel the start-and-stop of her inner dialogue.

The ending of this novel really surprised me. Ben's married, and Rachel finally sees that she needs to move on with her life, but the final twist made my heart soar and gave me the elated feeling I'd so hoped to experience. This brilliant read led me to purchase her follow-up novel, Here's Looking at You. If it's even half as humorous, poignant, and heart-warming as this one, I'll be thrilled.

    Five stars.

I requested You Had Me at Hello on a whim off Edelweiss. It look

I requested You Had Me at Hello on a whim off Edelweiss. It looked like such a cute chick lit and I've been craving a change of scenery from the usual YA books I read. I am glad to say that You Had Me at Hello managed to remind me of my love of chick lit books. It was fun, with a great storyline, a fantastic group of friends, and a very attractive (look and personality wise) love interest. I also really liked the writing style and how the story progressed. This novel is for all the people that have "the one that got away". It is about Rachel and Ben, how they met back in university when they were 18 to 21 and also 10 years later when they're 31. The story is centered during Rachel's 30s but we get a blast from the past every couple of chapters and I LOVED those chapters. You don't really know much about both of them in the beginning, even when they actually 'coincidently' (on Rachel's part) bump into each other. Rachel has been with her boyfriend Rhys for 13 years while we find Ben is actually married 'cue crying sound'. This isn't a novel about infidelity so be at ease. I was worried some cheating would happen and I personally don't know how I would feel about Ben and Rachel if it did happen, but it didn't. I think Ben and Rachel's chapters during their university years were my favorite. I liked Rachel as well as her friends in their 30s but there is a ton of talk about journalism. Rachel is a journalist and I personally yawned a bit during the times when she was at work and discussing with her co-workers, etc. I think that would honestly be my only complaint for this book and the reason why I didn't give it higher than four stars. It is a book full of laughs (being british and all) and I love it when my chick lit books are set in england (Sophie Kinsella anyone?) so this one definitely brought back all the reasons why I love chick lit books and how different and sometimes even better, they are compared to YA books. I definitely recommend it to older teens who are fans of contemporary YA or chick lits.
