Overview

From Rin Tin Tin to Casablanca to Harry Potter, the Warner Bros. story is the history of Hollywood. Eighty-five years of screen icons, legendary films, and history-making achievements are detailed in this comprehensive, photo-filled treasure trove, fully authorized by the studio.

No production company has had more legendary films, stars, or influence on the course of Hollywood than Warner Bros. Among the superstars who worked for the studio are Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, Marlon Brando, James Dean, and John Wayne. Filmmakers like Martin Scorsese and Stanley Kubrick made history for the studio, and it has been home to blockbuster franchises like Superman, Batman, Lethal Weapon, and Harry Potter.

Produced in conjunction with Warner Bros., this volume is the ultimate guide to the greatest movie studio in history. You Must Remember This: The Warner Bros. Story is also the companion to a five part documentary in the PBS American Masters series by author Richard Schickel that will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the spring of 2008 and debut on PBS in the fall, to coincide with publication of the book.

Editorial Reviews

Stephanie Zacharek
Perry's entries are the meat-and-potatoes of You Must Remember This, Schickel's, the gravy…In the end, of course, You Must Remember This…is a big, fat book stuffed with pictures: you couldn't tell the story of Warner Brothers without them. This is a heavy, handsome volume, though with its steel-gray and burnished-gold cover, it's also, fittingly, unostentatious: no need to run out and buy a fancy art deco chrome-and-glass MGM-style coffee table to put underneath it; in true Warner Brothers spirit, it will look just fine on your proletarian Ikea number. The pictures inside don't disappoint, either.
—The New York Times
Library Journal

This glorious, oversize volume is a celebration of the 85th anniversary of Warner Bros. Studios. Schickel, writer and producer of the companion PBS miniseries of the same name, and Perry (James Dean) have written a comprehensive history of the studio dating back to 1907 and the captivating stories of its four founding brothers. The authors trace the studio's rise-emphasizing its pivotal role in the development of cinematic art as well as its unique reputation for dealing with the grittier issues of life on-screen-referencing films ranging from the silent era to the groundbreaking talkie, The Jazz Singer, to the consummate studio achievement, Casablanca, to contemporary works. Commentary detailing films' contexts within the industry and their relationships to the larger framework of American culture is accompanied by an exceptional array of photos. There are also in-depth profiles of major stars, Bette Davis, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, and Doris Day, among them. A foreword by Clint Eastwood provides additional dimension to this superbly written and designed book. This is essential not only for film enthusiasts but also for anyone who has ever been enthralled by the silver screen. For circulating libraries and large film collections.
—Carol J. Binkowski

    Wonderful!

This is an excellent companion volume to the PBS miniseries. It's a thorough, intelligent, beautifully written, lavishly illustrated gem that immediately takes its place among the best books about movies ever written. All the Warner classics are here,as are some lesser known films you may want to seek out.The great Warner stars are here, too, including some who are unfairly forgotten today.Whether you are just thumbing through it or sitting down to read it cover to cover, this book is a complete joy from start to finish.Sit back, relax, and enjoy!
