    realisticly thought out

this story about kaitlyn is true (as in realistic) but i thought the reading level would be more advanced but it was a simple girl with a major problem. every teen goes through the problem of their weight and no matter what weight you are, you're perfect.

I think this is a must read for all parents, pre-teens, and youn

I think this is a must read for all parents, pre-teens, and young teens - girls and boys. While anorexia and bulimia are generally considered girls and young women's eating disorders I am sure there are just as many boys and young men who are affected as well. This story is told from Kaitlyn's point of view in a diary way. It reminds me that as adults and parents we need to be mindful of the things we tell our children and the kinds of terms we use to motivate them to change or modify their habits. We need to realize that young children and teens are still very much influenced by what they hear come out of our mouths. When we use harsh or mean nicknames we can inflict a lot of emotional damage to their young and fragile self-esteem. Kaitlyn struggles to come to terms with her life falling apart - her best friend moves away; a beloved sister is raped; her other is sister is an abused wife; her father's nicknames for her are unflattering, hurtful, and humiliating; and her mother doesn't want to see Kaitlyn is troubled. All in all a good book and although I was hesitant to read it, I am really glad I did. I think Elaine is a brilliant story teller and should go far with her other books.
