Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Bruce Eder
You Only Live Twice, like most of the other James Bond soundtrack albums in the series during the '60s, had more music than could easily be contained on one LP. This expanded, remastered reissue of the album contains an entire LP's worth of additional music, 35 minutes of material, although none of it is exactly a revelation. The best parts of John Barry's score were represented on the original album, and although some of the best music reappears here as parts of the bonus tracks, most notably "Aki, Tiger, and Osato," there's nothing new that registers that strongly. The annotation is very interesting, however, and the improved sound is a considerable virtue -- in addition ...

The most beautiful James Bond film theme song.

One book on the James Bond films claims that the title song to this movie is the most appealing of any ever written for the 007 films, and I agree. The lush strings with the main theme against the C Gm7 chord progression is beautiful. This theme is repeated in different variations on different instruments throughout the film & soundtrack, the most appealing of which is probably ''Mountains and Sunsets,'' which fits great with the film's scene of an Ama fishing boat one golden morning. Other songs reflect exciting scenes such as a car chase (''A Drop in the Ocean''), or a rooftop fight (''Fight at Kobe Dock''). ''Countdown for Blofeld'' gets a little monotonous, though. It's unfortunate that some other great music from the film was not included in this album, since there was plenty of room for bonus tracks: ''007 Theme'' (this is found only on the ''Dr. No'' soundtrack, though it appears in virtually every early 007 film, as it does here in the gyrocopter dogfight scenes), and the mysteriously beautiful unnamed string composition played where Bond is swimming out from a submarine's torpedo tube off the coast of Japan--a piece that occurs at two different places in the film. The film's a classic, and I regard the soundtrack as a classic, too.
