Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Sher and Doherty were the owners of Down to Earth, a vegan restaurant in Red Bank, NJ, for seven years, and this book was originally published as The Down to Earth Cookbook. It includes the most popular recipes they served at the restaurant, along with other favorites, ranging from Mediterranean Lentil Soup to Thai Coconut Tempeh Stix. There are separate chapters on raw foods and on food for babies and kids, as well as a useful guide to the vegan pantry. For subject collections that don't own the original edition (or that need to replace it).

    The title says it all!

Down to Earth (Red Bank, NJ), owned by authors Lacey Sher and Gail Doherty, was my favorite restaurant. One day in the spring 2007, I was in the neighborhood, went there to grab some lunch, and found out it was closed! So you can imagine how delighted I was when they reopened in a new Red Bank location last year, under the name Good Karma Cafe.

But I just had to re-create these incredible recipes at home. So I bought the book, and now I treat my family (including my three kids) to the all the cruelty-free, guilt-free fare I've come to know and love. My eleven-year-old daughter, a budding environmentalist, is always over my shoulder helping me try out new recipes. My twin sons are (thankfully) thinking outside the (blue mac and cheese) box. And even my partner, a die-hard meat-and-potatoes guy, is hooked.

Be warned, however, that some of the ingredients are a little harder to come by than others (coconut oil, no problem - umeboshi paste, on the other hand, more of a challenge). Nevertheless, from innovative raw foods to meatless comfort classics, this has become my favorite cookbook by far.
